Rossini - or the murderous question of who slept with whom is a German comedy by Helmut Dietl and Patrick Süskind , which was one of the most successful films of the year in 1997 with 3.2 million admissions in Germany.
action
The city's media scene meets in the Munich restaurant "Rossini", including the director Uhu Zigeuner , the producer Oskar Reiter and the poet Bodo Kriegnitz .
Gypsies and riders absolutely want to film the bestselling novel “ The Loreley ” by the extremely shy writer Jakob Windisch , although the author repeatedly opposes it.
The delays caused by the refusal are causing difficulties for the producer Reiter in particular, whose bank wants to turn off the money and even take over his production company.
Reiter himself is still in competition with Kriegnitz for the beautiful (and selfish) Valerie, who enjoys being courted by the two. However, when the unattractive doctor Dr. Gelber proposes marriage and - in his awkward manner, very romantic - wants to give her all of his possessions in a casket, she realizes that her two admirers, Reiter and Kriegnitz, are not interested in themselves, but only in their personal competition.
In addition, the sex-hungry gossip reporter Charlotte gradually unsuccessfully gets too close to the gypsies and horsemen and in the end rapes Windisch, which deeply upsets him. He is saved and brought home by his secret admirer, the waitress Serafina . However, she too is disappointed when she tries to seduce him.
Because of the planned filming, more or less talented blondes, who are trying to play the role of Loreley, flock to the production studio or the restaurant, without being able to impress. A pretty girl who appears under the name Snow White , on the other hand, skillfully stages herself and also proceeds more skilfully: She throws herself on the neck of anyone who could help her get the role. First she gains access to the restaurant through Rossini, then she turns gypsies' heads and finally riders too.
criticism
"An elaborately and solidly staged entertainment film at the intersection of comedy and tragedy, which, with pointed dialogues and good actors, creates the sometimes comical-bizarre, sometimes biting-macabre image of a world of people full of vanities."
“'Rossini' is at the forefront of German production , not least because of its overwhelming film language . Dietl's elegance of the staging à la Lubitsch, the flowing camera work by Gernot Roll, the incredible care in decor [...], equipment, costumes, colors, lighting and the open narrative structure result in a film jewel de luxe. "
“What was intended as a social satire turns out to be a superficial comedy in which the good actors are mere accessories. The film, which is supposedly inspired by real events, brings together all of the faces and motifs known from the successful German comedies of recent years, without even offering an idea of their own. A (although brilliantly photographed) clichéd, acted and staged film, in which Veronica Ferres of all people, as the embodiment of Lorelei, is stylized as the epitome of male longing. In short: superfluous, because boring as hell. "
Allusions and motives
The film contains numerous allusions to real people and places. The film character of the extremely shy author, played by Joachim Król , who does not want to have his book filmed for a lot of money, is said to have the co-screenwriter Patrick Süskind as a model. The book (in the film: "Loreley") is supposed to be his bestseller The Perfume . In fact, Süskind had turned down offers to film the novel for years - it wasn't until 2006, almost 20 years after it was published. Uhu Zigeuner alludes to the director and co-author of the screenplay, Helmut Dietl , Oskar Reiter to the successful producer Bernd Eichinger and Bodo Kriegnitz to the poet Wolf Wondratschek , from whose poem Carmen the subtitle “the murderous question of who slept with whom” comes. The story of the beautiful Valerie, desired by Reiter and Kriegnitz, who ultimately commits suicide, is based on the real person of the film editor Jane Seitz . The “Rossini” restaurant is based on the Munich eatery “Romagna Antica”, which was located in Schwabing at Elisabethstrasse 52, not far from the authors' film publisher . It was frequented by film celebrities (including Rainer Werner Fassbinder ) from the 1970s . Dietl and Eichinger were regulars there from the 1980s.
The people in the film are portrayed as unable to relate and selfish. Her vanities lead to comical scenes, especially in situations of weakness and need. Long-lasting relationships cannot come about in this way, although every figure is constantly looking for a bond or believes it is.
