Count Rudolf Friedrich Wilhelm von Kanitz (born August 14, 1822 in Stettin , † December 25, 1902 in Schmuggerow ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Origin and family

Rudolf came from the Prussian line of the von Kanitz family, which was raised to the rank of count in 1798 . His parents were the Prussian lieutenant general and war minister Count August von Kanitz (1783-1852) and Countess Luise von der Schulenburg from the Beetzendorf house (1799-1830). The theologian Wilhelm Hoffmann (1806–1873) was his brother-in-law.

In 1865 he married Countess Luise Hildegard Marie von Schwerin (1837–1912), maid of honor of the Queen , daughter of the Prussian State Minister Count Maximilian von Schwerin-Putzar (1804–1872) and Hildegard Maria Schleiermacher (1817–1889) at Gut Putzar . The marriage produced three daughters.

Career

He first attended the United Royal and City High School in Stettin, later the Blochmann Education Institute in Dresden .

At the age of 18 he joined the 1st Guards Regiment on foot in the Prussian army . In 1841 he was portepee ensign and in the same year advanced to secondary lieutenant . From 1847 to 1848 he was in command of the 4th Dragoon Regiment and during the mobilization from 1850 to 1851 he was adjutant of the 4th Battalion of the 1st Guards Regiment on foot. After that he was a teacher at the division school in Potsdam and from 1852 to 1855 adjutant of the 1st Battalion ( Königsberg i. Pr. ) Of the 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment. He rose to prime lieutenant in 1853 and captain in 1856 , and finally became company commander in the 1st Guards Regiment on foot in 1856 .

In the first half of 1860 he took part with distinction in the Spanish-Moroccan War , in particular the shaft at Samsa and the Battle of Vadraß. In June 1860 he was assigned to the King's service , whose wing adjutant he remained until 1866. He took part in the German-Danish War and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the same year . In the German War he took part in the Battle of Königgrätz and in the same year advanced to commander of the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot and colonel . In this capacity he took part in the Franco-Prussian War , in particular the Battle of Gravelotte , where he was badly wounded and honored, the Battle of Le Bourget and the Siege of Paris . In the last days of the war he became the commander of the 1st Guard Infantry Brigade .

After the peace treaty in May 1871, he was entrusted with the management of the Potsdam command office and was promoted to major general a little later while retaining his previous position .
