Rupert Stadler (born March 17, 1963 in Titting ) is a German manager . From 2007 to 2018 he was CEO of Audi AG . At the end of his tenure, Audi was involved in the emissions scandal.

Life

Rupert Stadler grew up as the son of a farmer in Wachenzell in the Eichstätt district . After attending the Rebdorf junior high school in Eichstätt , he studied business administration at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences with a focus on corporate planning / controlling as well as finance, banking and investment economics and graduated with a degree in business administration.

Stadler then worked at Philips Kommunikation Industrie AG in Nuremberg . In 1990 he moved to Audi AG, where he took on tasks in the controlling area. In 1994 he joined Volkswagen-Audi España, SA in Barcelona as commercial director . The Supervisory Board of Audi AG elected him as the new Chairman of the Board of Management on December 6, 2006 , and he took office on January 1, 2007. Stadler succeeded Martin Winterkorn , who moved to the parent company Volkswagen AG as Chairman of the Board of Management . From 2010 he was also a member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

Stadler was also a member of the Supervisory Board of Porsche Holding Gesellschaft mbH, President of the Board of Directors of Automobili Lamborghini SpA , President of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen Group Italia SPA, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of MAN Truck & Bus AG, member of the Supervisory Board of MAN SE, member of the Board of Directors of Italdesign Giugiaro SpA, member of the board of directors of FC Bayern München AG .

Stadler is married and has three children.

Exhaust scandal

In the course of the emissions scandal , Audi top manager Ulrich Hackenberg had to vacate his post in December 2015. His successor Stefan Knirsch had to leave in September 2016. With Ulrich Weiß , the dismissed head of Audi engine development, and the ex-executives / senior developers Carsten N. and Zaccheo Giovanni Pamio , numerous executives have already had to leave the company. Whether Stadler was aware of the manipulation or was involved in it is (as of February 2020) the subject of various investigations. Stadler is, however, sometimes heavily burdened by former managers. There are also numerous indications that the VW Group's emissions scandal originated at Audi.

In the course of a raid on April 18 and 19, 2018 by around 200 police officers and public prosecutors at Porsche in Zuffenhausen and at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach, Rupert Stadler was severely incriminated by the public prosecutor for manipulating a presentation together with Porsche Development Board Member Michael Steiner supposed to misinform the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on November 19, 2015 by submitting this manipulated presentation and to divert attention from exhaust gas fraud on the part of the VW group.

Since May 30, 2018 he has been a suspect in the emissions scandal. On June 11, 2018, the Munich II public prosecutor's office had his private apartment searched. He and one other member of the Board of Management are charged with fraud, indirect false certification and criminal advertising . On June 18, 2018 Stadler was due to danger of collusion in remand taken. He is said to have tried to influence witnesses beforehand. On June 19, 2018, Stadler was then given leave of absence from the Audi Supervisory Board. On October 2, 2018, the VW supervisory board decided to part with Stadler with immediate effect and to conclude a termination agreement with him. At the same time, he lost his position as CEO of Audi. On October 30th, after four months, he was released from custody on security. At the same time, he was ordered not to contact co-accused or witnesses unless the public prosecutor approved. But there is still an urgent suspicion . In July 2019, the Munich II public prosecutor brought charges against Stadler before the Munich II district court. In June 2020, the Munich II district court admitted the charges. The process is scheduled to start on September 30, 2020.

Others

Since November 2012 he has been honorary professor at the University of St. Gallen . He has also lectured at Oxford University (2015), Tongji University in Shanghai (2016) and Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla in Mexico . He worked regularly as a lecturer on corporate strategy at the Technical University of Munich .

Social Commitment

In 2012 the Association of German Magazine Publishers honored him with the "Golden Victoria for Entrepreneur of the Year". As a company leader, he not only leads successfully, but above all sustainably, according to the jury. In 2013, Stadler criticized in an article in the name of the WirtschaftsWoche "frivolous lending, speculative business and the increasing decoupling of the financial markets from the real economy, where raw materials and food are withered into objects of speculation." to become a model ”. This does not formulate excessive return requests, but rather “feeds part of the profit back into the company because it invests and operates over the long term. He shares his employees in the success because he rewards performance and believes that employees are particularly motivated when they can identify with the company's goals ”. In November 2013, as a member of the supervisory board, he stated that " Uli Hoeneß should continue to exercise the office of chairman of the supervisory board of FC Bayern München AG [...]" as long as there was no final judgment. In April 2014 he emphasized the importance of “Audi adhering to rules and standards”. As the main sponsor of the German AIDS Foundation , he opened the 21st Festive Opera Gala in Berlin at the beginning of 2015 in his role as Audi CEO, where he presented honorary chairwoman Rita Süssmuth with a donation of 200,000 euros. In mid-2015, the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration awarded Stadler “for sustainability in corporate management and high value awareness, both in moral terms and with regard to the quality of goods”. He has made an exemplary contribution to the link between science and entrepreneurship and is looking for scientifically sound solutions. A car manufacturer that, after the World Climate Agreement in Paris 2015, is still “relying exclusively on fossil fuels”, is “threatening to become a fossil itself,” he said in March 2016 at Audi's annual press conference.
