Ryan Gregory Malone (born December 1, 1979 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The left winger played over 600 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League between 2003 and 2014 . With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .
Career
The 1.93 m tall winger initially played for various US junior teams, during his college days he was on the team of St. Cloud State University , which competes in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft , Malone was finally selected ( drafted ) as 115th in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Penguins .
Towards the end of the 2002/03 season, the American was for the first time in the squad of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , a farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the American Hockey League . Already in the following season Malone made the jump into the NHL roster of the franchise from Pittsburgh, behind Dick Tärnström and Alexei Morosow he was immediately the third best scorer of the Penguins. The lockout in the NHL season 2004/05 spent the attacker with the Espoo Blues of the Finnish SM-liiga , Ritten Sport of the Italian Serie A1 and the HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National League A . For the 2005/06 season , the attacker returned to the squad of the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2008 , but was defeated there in six games by the Detroit Red Wings . At the end of the season, Malone became a free agent . Since Pittsburgh could not agree on a new contract with him, however, they transferred the initial negotiating rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning , which brought him to sign a $ 31.5 million seven-year contract a little later.
After six years in Florida, his contract was not renewed at the end of the 2013/14 season, so he joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in September 2014 . In February 2015, the Rangers put him on the waiver to terminate his contract. Malone did not play for two years before receiving a trial contract with the Minnesota Wild in late August 2017 . This did not result in a permanent commitment, so that he switched to their farm team, the Iowa Wild , in the same way in October 2017 . There he played twelve games before he finally declared his active career over. In total, he had completed 690 games in the NHL and recorded 392 points.

With the US national team , Ryan Malone won the bronze medal at the 2004 World Cup , and at the 2006 World Cup he finished seventh with Team USA.
