life and work

Sabina Sakoh was born in Munich in 1968. Her grandfather was the resistance fighter and artist Günther Strupp , a friend of Bertolt Brecht . He brought her to painting. From 1988 she studied at the Munich Art Academy (with Hans Baschang ). From 1989 to 1992 she was enrolled at the German master school for fashion there with Stephan Kehlhammer and Hans Schütz, where she completed her diploma. Since 1993 Sakoh has been working as a freelance painter (until 2010 under her maiden name). Sakoh became known beyond art circles after the then German Foreign Minister (2009 to 2013) Guido Westerwelle had her painting 'February' hung in his office at the Foreign Office .

Sabina Sakoh's pictures show figures in landscapes and in interiors, which structure the pictorial space according to both classical and innovative composition rules. The figures are contemporary interpretations of historical personnel and alienations of Christian iconography . They develop painterly from color, whereas the surroundings are often only hinted at. The often puzzling behavior of the characters gives the paintings a neo-surrealist character. She is thus one of the most important figurative artists of her generation, such as Tim Eitel , Neo Rauch , Matthias Weischer or Cornelia Schleime .

Her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions, project spaces and biennials, e.g. B. in New York , Miami , Berlin , Budapest , Venice , Cologne or Beijing shown.

She is represented by the Michael Schultz Gallery .
