Salzburg lake area

The Salzburg Lake District is a region in the northeast of the Austrian state of Salzburg . The geographical name results from the presence of a few lakes within a relatively small area. The predominantly tourist name Salzburger Seenland , under which tourism in this area is advertised, is more or less the same . The two terms are usually used synonymously in everyday life.

The Salzburg lake area is located northeast of the provincial capital Salzburg in the Salzburg-Umgebung district (Flachgau) and forms a large part of the Salzburg Alpine foreland with an area of around 260 km² . The lakes that gave the region its name are the

In addition, the small leech lakes can be found here in a moor area .
Despite its geographical proximity, the Salzburg lake area does not count towards the south-east bordering Salzkammergut with its numerous lakes.

Regional Association of the Salzburg Lake District
For the purpose of regional development, the Regional Association of the Salzburg Lake District was founded in 1995 , in which all municipalities in this region are united. He is particularly concerned with spatial planning and public relations work, with strengthening the infrastructure as well as with questions of energy, waste management and environmental advice. In addition to the member communities, the community of Eugendorf also has a say in the latter . Last but not least, the regional association also has the task of promoting tourism in this area.

The region has a sometimes considerable amount of commuter traffic to the nearby state capital. In order to promote local public transport , the member municipalities there form an association together with the municipalities of Bergheim , Eugendorf, Elixhausen and Hallwang .
The Salzburg lake area is accessible to the public via several post bus routes and the S 2 line of the Salzburg S-Bahn . In addition to individual important connecting roads, the Westautobahn (A1) with the Wallersee exit and Wiener Straße (B1) as the main artery through this area are of primary importance for individual traffic .
Tourism, sport and leisure
The Salzburg Lake District forms an independent tourist region in Austria. The geographical proximity to the city of Salzburg means that these communities and lakes are mainly used as weekend destinations by the residents of Salzburg. Due to the lack of opportunities for winter sports, the region is mainly of interest for summer tourism. The regional association, in which the “Seenland Tourismus GmbH” is integrated, promotes foreign tourism in particular under the name “Salzburger Seenland”.
For advertising reasons, other municipalities in the north of the Salzburg-Umgebung district were also listed under the “Salzburger Seenland” brand for a while, but they are located outside the lake area and have no real share in tourism in this area. These were the communities of Bürmoos , Lamprechtshausen and Sankt Georgen near Salzburg . (The latter two have now joined the Upper Austrian-Bavarian tourist region of Seelentium .) Other Salzburg municipalities in the tourist association are Dorfbeuern and Oberndorf near Salzburg . The municipalities of Lochen am See and Perwang am Grabensee , which also belong to the Salzburger Seenland Tourist Association, are located on the Upper Austrian side, bordering the Salzburg Lake District .
Primarily the sport and leisure opportunities at the lakes and in nature are advertised. Visits to individual facilities and cultural events are also offered.
Sections of several thematically motivated cycle paths lead through some municipalities in the Salzburg Lake District and the Lake District tourism region , for example the Bavarian-Austrian Mozart cycle path , the also international Bavarian cycle path and part of the “Salt and Lake Tour”, a circular route through the towns of the lake area with communities in the southern part of the greater Salzburg area.
