Schellsitz is a district of Naumburg (Saale) and is located in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

Schellsitz is about 3 km before Naumburg, near the desert of Othmaritz . The place is on the north bank of the Saale opposite the mouth of the Wethau .

Schellsitz was first mentioned in a document in 1186 in the will of nobleman Hugo von Schönburg . Afterwards his son Hermann should receive the income from Scelsin from Count Dedo .

Until 1815 Schellsitz belonged to the Wettin , later Electoral Saxon office of Freyburg . Jurisdiction over the place was after the dissolution of George monastery but in the Bishopric of Naumburg associated office Naumburg . Through the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the place was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia and assigned to the newly formed district of Naumburg in the administrative district of Merseburg in the province of Saxony in 1818. In 1822 , 249 inhabitants lived in 48 houses in the place, which was also written as Zschellsitz .

To the north-west of the district there is a post mill on a mountain . This was built in Meerane in 1801 and came to Schellsitz in 1870. The mill was used here for grinding grain from 1870. In 1991 the mill was extensively restored.

On July 1, 1950, the village was incorporated into Naumburg.

When the Saale floods the century in April 1994, the place is almost completely flooded. Only through the commitment of many citizens, including Naumburg, as well as the Bundeswehr from Weißenfels , the district can be saved by raising the dike with 15,000 sandbags. On April 14, 1994, the level in the hall reached its highest level of 6.35 meters. As a result of this flood, the dam protecting the district was raised in 1999.

In 1999, a local council was elected for the first time , which represents the interests of the former village and can thus better control the fate of the district.

Since 2002 the Schellsitzer Fährverein has been taking care of the ferry connection across the Saale again. This connects the district with the rock cellar on the other bank, which belongs to Schönburg .

The first evidence of such a ferry connection dates back to 1926. In 1992, after 17 years of inactivity, the ferry service was resumed by the city of Naumburg.

Buildings

church

The Schellsitz Church is mentioned for the first time in 1226. It was founded by Abbot Johannes von Sankt Georgen and consecrated by Bishop Engelhard . In the years 1682 to 1688 the appearance of the church was changed significantly. The church tower received rectangular windows on the upper floor and arched windows in the lower floor. An octagonal bell cage was also placed on the tower. In 1719 a nave was built on the church above the flat ceiling and decorated with some paintings. After the church fell into disrepair over the years, renovation work began on the tower in 1986. At the same time, the roofs received a new covering. During this work, a small silver treasure was discovered in the ball of the weather vane . → see also: Schellsitz village church
