Guilt and Atonement is a television film from the Schimanski crime series on ARD .

The film was produced by Colonia Media and first aired on January 30, 2011. It is the 16th episode in the Schimanski series with Götz George . Schimanski does not remain idle when a young policeman, with whose mother he is friends, shoots himself and is stunned to realize that corruption is the order of the day in the police station on Ruhrstrasse .

Horst Schimanski sits exhausted in an old factory building in front of the dead policeman Günther Patzak and tells him how he was converted from a crook to a policeman. In front of the building, district manager Paul Hinz asks him to give up.

At Erkan's snack stand, Schimanski observes a violent argument between the police officers Patzak and Kroppen on the one hand and Albanian youths on the other hand, which can be defused by the police officers Martin Schmale and Oliver Hoppe after the arrival. Hoppe lets the Albanian Tasci run, which annoys Patzak extremely. After the police have left, Schimanski happens to find a bag of drugs there, which he destroys without hesitation.

Schimanski, who was good friends with Oliver Hoppe's deceased father, tries to find out the reason for the clumsy police action that morning in his mother Sonja Hoppe's pub , with whom he is also close friends. But Hoppe gives him to understand that Schimanski, as an ex-cop, doesn't understand anything about everyday police life today and retires to his basement apartment. Hoppe's mother Sonja complains to Schimanski that her son has changed a lot in the last few weeks. During the night Hoppe shoots himself in the mouth in his apartment. The shot is heard by his mother, who notifies her son's colleagues who break the door to his room and find the young policeman dead. Schimanski arrives at the scene and initially does not believe that Hoppe has committed suicide. Chief Detective Thomas Hunger, who works with Schimanski's former colleague Hänschen, is tasked with the investigation. The case took a turn when a few hours later a dead Roma girl , who came from the Albanian red light scene, was dragged out of the Rhine .

Schimanski's interest in Oliver Hoppe's death makes his colleagues nervous. Patzak then influences Schimanski's friend Marie-Claire by harassing and intimidating her. After Hoppe's funeral, Schimanski is approached by the internal police investigator Max von Rüden, as there is a suspicion of corruption against a number of police officers in the Ruhr area. Schimanski von Rüden hides an envelope with drugs and money that Sonja Hoppe had previously found in Oliver's apartment in order to protect the young policeman's reputation. After Schimanski accidentally finds Oliver's cell phone , he discovers the dead Roma girl whom he had recently seen in forensic medicine in the presence of Thomas Hunger. He is now looking for another Roma girl who can be seen in the photos next to the dead girl. He suspects the young woman to be in an Albanian brothel . Everything indicates that the upcoming raids by the Ruhrstrasse police officers were betrayed and that they were informed again and that the girl named Irina was taken out of the brothel in good time and hidden elsewhere.

Schimanski shadows the brothel and follows the owner to a secret apartment, where he can outsmart the guardian and take Irina with him. First he hides the young woman with Sonja Hoppe. When Hunger finds out, he demands her extradition as a witness. This does not happen, however, because a jeep purposefully rams the car in which Schimanski is traveling with Irina and his girlfriend Marie-Claire and the girl then flees in panic to an unknown location. Marie-Claire is hospitalized while Schimanski is only slightly injured. The police officers of Ruhrstrasse get into trouble because of Rüdens investigations into their precinct and do everything in their power to get hold of Irina's as well. When Schimanski is staying with Erkan, he learns from homeless youths where the refugee woman is hiding and is able to save her from the officers Patzak and Schmale accessing his apartment.

Schimanski complains furiously to von Rüden that he used the inexperienced Hoppe against his colleagues in order to investigate them in secret. He thinks that most of the police in the Ruhrstrasse area do a very good job, but if you don't find the black sheep, the entire area might be shut down. When Schimanski meets with Hänschen and exchanges the facts, she is shot at. Hänschen, who stands protectively in front of Schimanski, is hit by two bullets and an emergency operation is carried out in the hospital . Unexpectedly, the police officer Petra Kroppen asks Schimanski over the phone to an old warehouse to explain some things to him. To Schimanski's surprise, she appears at the meeting point with Patzak, who explains to him that he shot the girl. A scuffle breaks out between the two men. A shot goes off and hits Patzak, who, dying, tries to justify his actions. Oliver Hoppe wanted to deliver his colleagues to the knife, for which he had to be punished. Irina betrayed Oliver and then the whole thing somehow got out of hand, so he had to watch as Svetlana, the woman he fell in love with and who he wanted to get out of the milieu, was shot at close range with his gun .

Hinz, von Rüden, Schmale and Hunger have already pulled up in front of the building and after a long hesitation storm the hall. Petra Kroppen suddenly threatens Schimanski and is shot in the back by Hinz just as she is about to give up. Schimanski later speaks to Irina again and tells her that she has betrayed Svetlana, who trusted her. He can't forgive her, he lets the bitterly weeping woman know that those who can are dead.

Schimanski confronts district manager Paul Hinz with his knowledge that the wave of corruption was steered by himself before his retirement and that Hinz shot Petra Kroppen, the only witness who could have incriminated him, out of self-interest. Since he will tell the truth, he gives the district manager the choice of facing his responsibility. Hinz should bring it to an end - one way or another.

This Schimanski episode was created between February 23 and March 25, 2010. The filming locations were Duisburg and Cologne and the surrounding area. Guilt and atonement are told from the flashback . The first scenes of the film show the end after Schimanski killed the policeman Patzak in a scuffle in a hall. The same narrative style was already used in the crime scene The Schimanski case . At the end of the film, Gary Jules plays the cover version of Mad World , a song by the British pop group Tears for Fears that appeared in Donnie Darko at the end of the film.

Hannes Jaenicke made his debut in 1984 in the film Downhill at the side of Schimanski actor Götz George. In addition to this film, he has also appeared twice ( Zabou , siblings ) in a Schimanski crime thriller in a supporting role.
