Schmidt Theater
The Schmidt Theater is a private theater on Spielbudenplatz in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli . It has three venues, the Schmidt Theater itself (423 seats), the “Great House” called Schmidts Tivoli (620 seats) and the Schmidtchen (200 seats) just a few steps away . The theater was co-founded by Corny Littmann . The theater works without government funding.
history
The Schmidt Theater opened on August 8, 1988, at 8 minutes past 8 (evening). Schmidts Tivoli opened its doors on September 1st 1991 in the former "Zillertal". In the early days, the Schmidt family included "Herr Schmidt" (Corny Littmann), Lilo Wanders (Ernie Reinhardt), Mario Rispo and, from 1990, Marlene Jaschke ( Jutta Wübbe )
The midnight show with a surprise program of professional cabaret acts and amateur performances was particularly popular. The individual numbers rarely lasted longer than a few minutes. These midnight shows were broadcast on television by NDR from 1989 onwards and from Schmidt, Tivoli and other venues from 1993 onwards, and made the Schmidt Theater famous throughout Germany. Artists such as Rosenstolz , Olivia Jones , Christine Licht , André Eisermann , Georgette Dee , Udo Lindenberg , Konrad Stöckel , Marianne Rosenberg and Kay Ray performed . Until 1993, the midnight show was broadcast once a month.
In 2004 the old Schmidt Theater had to be demolished due to dilapidation. A new building was built in its place, which has housed the new Schmidt Theater since August 8, 2005. Despite the modern facade of the new theater, the plush charm of the old Schmidt Theater has been retained inside.
The Schmidtchen was opened in 2015 on the property to the east. With up to 200 seats, it is the smallest of the three venues.
