The Seebach is a 13 km long forest stream in the Neckar-Odenwald district in northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the lower Neckar from the right and northeast in Neckargerach . It is the largest Neckar tributary between the Elz and Itter .

The Neckar has three tributaries with this name together with this lowest one, the upper Seebach flows into Nürtingen, the middle Seebach flows into Mundelsheim.

Surname

The Seebach was formerly called Gerach . This name has been preserved in that of the win at the origin of the stream as well as the place of its mouth.

geography

course

The Seebach arises at about 485  m above sea level. NHN in the meadow bay Gerachswiesen approx. 1.4 km southwest of the village of Wagenschwend in the Limbach municipality, just on the outskirts. There, next to a small lake at the edge of the forest, begins a ditch that initially extends to the southeast. A map from the early 20th century shows more than 400 meters further north at about 515  m above sea level. NHN at a water house an entry "Gerachsqu.", From where a small channel runs down to the origin shown on today's maps; next to this straight channel, the slope meadow shows sandy runoff. The Seebach enters the forest about two hundred meters after its source at the lake, where an equally long moat runs from the Rotebrunnen spring on the other side of the forest bay along the forest contour. The next one and a half kilometers between the Buchwald forest, which belongs to the municipality of Fahrenbach, and the large Michelherd forest of the town of Mosbach, its upper valley deepens by about 60 meters.

After this section of the forest, shortly before Robern, it turns south on the left slope and runs through the flat and moist lake meadows on its next kilometer through the nature reserve Roberner See , at the end of which it crosses the more than hectare-sized reservoir after which it is named.

After that it flows in an approximately south-westerly direction through a wooded Kerbtal, the bottom of which thins out into valley meadows several times. It passes the village of Fahrenbach, a little further away from the valley, on the left plateau, takes in the Wallenbächlein from the Michelherd , runs through a small pond in the valley meadows that are now partially afforested and flows at almost 274  m above sea level. NHN under the brook bridge of the L 589 coming from Mosbach in the south, which leads north to the village of Weisbach in the community of Waldbrunn on the right plateau. The main road, which crosses the valley with two inclined slopes, is the only public road up to the estuary.

One to one and a half kilometers further down, the valley begins in a loop to the north around the Fleischberg , at the summit of which the Weisbach flows. This largest tributary of the Seebach arises far to the north near the Waldbrunn village of Strümpfelbrunn . After the valley curve, the Seebach continues in the old direction and passes the Neckargeracher Läufertsmühle on the right bank, from which the valley floor remains open. Before and after this first and small settlement area in the valley, two shorter tributaries flow through Klingen from the plateau on the left.

A little before the tributary of the Tiefensteigbächlein , which is again longer and comes from the north , the Seebach reaches the local border of Neckargerach . A little further down, he passes the former local mill, emerges into the right widening of the Neckar valley, in which the main part of the village is located. In the village, it crosses under the Neckar Valley Railway , divides the town center, crosses under the B 37 , which runs along the riverbank, and then flows out at about 127.9  m above sea level. NHN from the right into the lower Neckar .

Calculated between the origin at the lake in the Gerachswiesen and the mouth, the Seebach is 12.9 km long. On this route, which has a mean slope of about 28 ‰, it falls by about 357 meters.

Catchment area

The Seebach drains an area of 35.8 km², which is naturally part of the sandstone Odenwald ; Almost nine tenths of this count towards its sub-area Winterhauch , the rest near the mouth to its sub-area Odenwald-Neckar Valley . The with about 546  m above sea level. NHN's highest point is on the northern border on a forest knoll southeast of the Waldbrunn village of Mülben . The Seebach initially flows close to its northeastern watershed, and after its bend it flows close to its southeastern watershed. Forest stands on almost two thirds of its catchment area. Almost only the higher areas are open, some far to the right of the watercourse on the Odenwald plateau around Wagenscheid and above all Weisbach, Strümpfelbrunn, Schollbrunn and Lauerskreuz, as well as a small area near Robern immediately to the left of the course.

The stream first passes the first settlement, the Läufertsmühle, far down the river, which is then only followed by the estuary village Neckargerach. Away from the creek in the catchment area are the village of Weisbach , the residential area Weisbacher Mühle in the valley of the largest tributary, Weisbach, a gusset of the village of Strümpfelbrunn , almost all of Schollbrunn (all four to the community of Waldbrunn ) and the hamlet of Lauerskreuz (like the Läufertsmühle to the community of Neckargerach ) and the southwest edge of Robern (to the municipality of Fahrenbach ). Settlement-free areas also belong to the municipality of Limbach and, in the form of the Michelherd forest area to the right and further down, also to the left of the upper and middle creek, above all to the town of Mosbach .

The streams competing in turn also ultimately drain to the Neckar. In the west, the Koppenbach runs a little downwards to the Seebach estuary in Zwingenberg , in the northwest the Holderbach , which feeds the lowest Itter from the left, competes with the higher Itter tributary Reisenbach , for the most part via its large tributary Höllbach . The outflow of the neighboring waters in the east and especially in the south-east reaches the Elz, which flows into the Neckar above the Seebach , via their right tributaries Trienzbach , Hasbach and Nüstenbach . Behind a short stretch of the southern watershed, the small Flursbach falls through the Margarethenschlucht gorge shortly before Neckargerach down to the Neckar.

In the catchment area there is predominantly red sandstone and especially on the plateaus almost everywhere the upper red sandstone , while the narrow and deepened sections of the valley channels of the larger water courses mostly reach the middle red sandstone or cut into the slope. Lower Muschelkalk lies only on a very small area east of Reichenbuch on the upper reaches of the stream through the Kalte Klinge . These old Triassic layers are partly overlaid in the flat upper reaches of the brooks by loess- bearing floating earth or by loess sediment from the Quaternary .

The most striking tectonic structure is a very far-reaching fault structure that runs through the entire Odenwald from nearby beeches in the northeast to around Sinsheim in the southwest, with interruptions and a slight lateral offset, which the Seebach follows very precisely from around Lake Robern to the mouth. In the valley area, it partially shifts Middle Buntsandstein in the southeast (Hochscholle) to Upper Buntsandstein (Tiefscholle) in the northwest.

An abandoned quarry in the lower blade of the Tiefensteigbächle between Lauerskreuz and the outskirts of Neckargerach opens up the spherical horizon of the flat sandstone (Upper Muschelkalk).

Protected areas

The 2.2 hectare Kiefernmoor Eckertsrain natural monument lies on the northern edge of the catchment area, west of Wagenschwend .

In the Seewiesen near Robern, the brook runs for a good kilometer to the kink of the lake of the same name in the 22.8 hectare Roberner See nature reserve . It is located in a flat, southward stretch of the Muldental valley in front of the long southwestern Kerbtalllauf of the brook, mostly in an open corridor. The reservoir was created in 1966, at a place where a swell pond used to collect water for the periodic drift of logs . In the valley above there are the remains of dams of other former swell ponds. Other hydraulic engineering remains show that earlier on the Seebach meadow irrigation of the grassland accompanying the stream was carried out. Waterlogging zones have formed locally on the water- retaining red tones of the Upper Buntsandstein. A number of types of sedges grow in the nature reserve . There is a floating leaf zone around the lakeshore and a Großseggenried with Bulten in the upper area . Alder trees and bushy willows stand here and there by the stream and the ditches that run into it. Thanks to the open water surface of the lake and the changing character of the surrounding wet meadows, some water bird species are native to the area and migrants stop here. Insects and amphibians also live in large numbers in the area.

Immediately before the mouth of the Weisbach, on the slope of the Umlaufsporn Fleischberg and partly opposite, there is a 9.8 hectare Seebachtal forest . There is a loose block dump overgrown with trees (maple-ash block forest).

There are two water protection areas around the approaching Weisbach, the lower one extends to the right bank of the Seebach.

The valley basin of the Seebach from the Roberner See down to Neckargerach as well as that of the Weisbach flowing towards it, on both sides of the lower Seebach also large areas of plateau are part of the landscape protection area Neckartal II with Koppenbachtal, Weisbachtal and Seebachtal .

Mills

  • (Mill west of Robern)
The mill that was once left of the water in front of the forest exit of the Seebach in the Seewiesen near Robern has gone; where it stood is a small clearing in the forest today.
  • Läufertsmühle , formerly Gerachermühle
The mill is still around 2.5 km from the confluence with the Neckar at the beginning of the permanently open valley floor.
  • Ortsmühle in Neckargerach
still stands to the left of the course in Neckargerach at the transition from the Seebach valley to the Neckar valley.
