- London: The Third Man , directed by Carol Reed and written by Graham Greene , is on Ver. Kingdom of Great Britain in theaters. Film location Vienna .
- Cannes : The 3rd International Film Festival will take place from September 2nd to 17th.
Wednesday September 7th
- Bonn : The first German Bundestag meets; the meeting will be opened by the senior president Paul Löbe (SPD); Erich Köhler (CDU) is elected President of the Bundestag . On the same day, the Federal Council of the FRG meets for the first time, chaired by the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Karl Arnold .
- Offenbach am Main : The Deutsche Bundesbahn is founded as the successor to the Reichsbahn for the federal territory.
Sunday September 11th
- Switzerland : In a referendum, the popular initiative Return to Direct Democracy is accepted.
Monday September 12th
- Germany: Theodor Heuss (FDP) is supported by the Federal Assembly for the first President elected.
Tuesday September 13th
- New York / United States : The Soviet Union talks in the United Nations Security Council veto to hold Ceylon , Finland , Ireland , Italy , Austria , Portugal and Transjordan from the United Nations.
Thursday September 15th
- Bonn: The Bundestag elects Konrad Adenauer (CDU) on September 15, 1949 with a majority of one vote as the first Federal Chancellor: to an office that he will hold until his resignation on October 15, 1963. Opposition leader will be his opponent Kurt Schumacher (SPD).
Friday September 16
- Federal President Heuss hands Adenauer the certificate of appointment.
Sunday September 18th
- Germany : In the Soviet occupation zone , the DS-Liga begins as the first nationwide staging of a football championship in what will later be the GDR in the league system. However, despite political discussions, the Berlin clubs still belong to the Berlin City League .
Monday, September 19th
- London / United Kingdom : The British pound is devalued by 30% against the US dollar . This is putting the Bank Deutscher Länder under pressure with regard to a devaluation of the Deutsche Mark, which is valid in the Trizone and in the western sectors of Berlin . The final determination of the external value remains with the Allies .
Tuesday 20th September
- Bonn: Chancellor Adenauer makes his first government statement in front of parliament.
Wednesday September 21
- Germany: The Allied High Commissioners John Jay McCloy , Sir Brian Robertson and André François-Poncet announce the end of the military government in West Germany in the presence of the new Federal Cabinet ( Office of Military Government for Germany (US) etc.) - now there was the Allied high Commission (engl. Allied high Commission, French. Haute commission alliée). At the meeting, Konrad Adenauer mentioned the idea of a “European federation” in his guest speech .
Friday 23 September
- United States : According to US President Truman , the Soviet Union has risen to the rank of a nuclear power as the second country on earth : “We have evidence within recent weeks an atomic explosion occurred in the USSR.” ( German: “We have certainty that in the last Weeks in the USSR there was an atomic explosion. " )
Sunday September 25th
- Xinjiang / China : The province of Xinjiang, previously allied with the conservative Kuomintang , declares the end of their resistance in the Chinese civil war that has been going on since 1927 in a letter to Mao Zedong ( Communist Party of China ).
Wednesday September 28th
- Petersberg / Germany : The Allied High Commission sets the exchange rate of the German mark at 0.238 US dollars . According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, this devaluation of the external value of the German currency costs the country 420 million Deutschmarks per year .
Friday September 30th
- The last supply aircraft with 10 t of coal on board lands in the western part of Berlin as part of the Berlin Airlift .
