- Düsseldorf / Germany : The members of the "Society for the Promotion of Basketball Sports " found the German Basketball Federation .
- Munich / Germany : The Upper Federal Authority, the German Patent Office , begins its work in the German Museum of Masterpieces of Science and Technology .
- Beijing / China : Mao Tsetung , leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), announces the establishment of the "People's Republic of China". The party is also introducing a new national flag . It is red and has five stars - the largest of the stars symbolizes the CCP.
Sunday October 2, 1949
- Germany : On the occasion of the World Day of Peace celebrations , the Soviet military administration in Germany interrupted the blockade of the border between the Soviet occupation zone and the Federal Republic of Germany for three days without restriction for passenger traffic.
- Hameln / Germany : Sections of the German Conservative Party that are turned towards National Socialism - German right-wing party, headed by the former commander of the Führer-Accompanying Battalion Otto Ernst Remer , found the Socialist Reich Party of Germany .
Wednesday October 5, 1949
- Asunción / Paraguay : The government imposes a state of siege on the entire national territory.
- Paris / France : Henri Queuille of the Republican, Radical and Radical Socialist Party submits his request to President Vincent Auriol to resign as President of the Council of Ministers .
Thursday October 6, 1949
- Washington, DC / United States : US President Harry S. Truman signs the Mutual Defense Assistance Act ( German law for mutual defense assistance ), which implements the principle of the North Atlantic Treaty in national law. All contracting states will be defended by the United States in the event of an attack on their territory . Likewise, the United States will receive military aid from all contracting parties should it be attacked on its territory.
Friday October 7th 1949
- Berlin / Germany : The co-chairman of the SED Wilhelm Pieck announced the establishment of the "German Democratic Republic" (GDR) by the meeting of the 2nd German People's Council of the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) the manifest for the National Front of Democratic Germany reads and the People's Council declared a provisional People's Chamber . This then passes all the necessary laws for the establishment of a state, including a. the constitution for the constitution of the GDR , approved by the People's Council on May 30th, is declared. The GDR is the same area as the Soviet Zone. Germany is divided into two German states.
- Berlin / Germany : The SED parliamentary group in the provisional People's Chamber names Otto Grotewohl, the co-chairman of its own party as Prime Minister of the GDR .
Saturday, October 8, 1949
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Representatives of both German states sign an agreement on interzonal trade , which specifies the goods that can be legally traded across the inner-German border .
Sunday October 9, 1949
- Tirana / Albania : In the Greek Civil War , the leadership of the Communist Party of Greece decides to unilaterally stop the fighting.
- Vienna / Austria : In the National Council election , the ÖVP of the incumbent Chancellor Leopold Figl becomes the party with the highest number of votes. The Socialists (SPÖ) achieve the second best result. The ÖVP has 77 seats in the National Council , the SPÖ 67, the Independents 16 and the KPÖ five.
Monday October 10, 1949
- Berlin / Germany : In the established three days ago DDR converts Soviet Union , the Soviet Military Administration in Germany in the People's Control Commission , and transmits the power to govern the authorities of the GDR. From the Soviet point of view, this is an independent state . The transfer of administrative power is to take place in the next few weeks.
- Hamburg / Germany : A plane takes off from Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel Airport for the first scheduled flight to New York , with stopovers in Ireland and Newfoundland .
Tuesday October 11, 1949
- Berlin / Germany : The provisional Volkskammer and the Länderkammer elect Wilhelm Pieck as President of the GDR . Pieck is a former member of the SPD , USPD and KPD and today, together with Otto Grotewohl, chairman of the SED .
- Bonn / Germany : With the election of an executive committee, the journalists accredited to the Bundestag establish the Federal Press Conference Association .
Wednesday October 12, 1949
- Munich / Germany : The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) is constituted at the congress of the West German trade union federations . Hans Böckler is elected first DGB federal chairman.
Friday October 14, 1949
- Hamburg / Germany : The program guide with the highest circulation in the Federal Republic of Hörzu appears with the new editorial mascot Mecki on the cover. The fictional hedgehog is supposed to comment critically on the radio program and, according to the editor-in-chief Eduard Rhein, remains an integral part of the publication.
Monday October 17, 1949
- Xiamen / China : In the 23rd year of civil war, the People's Liberation Army captured the port city of Xiamen in the south-east of the country. You are now facing the conquest of the island of Jīnmén , to which the fighters of the anti- communist National People's Party of China have withdrawn. The People's Army has 150,000 fighters available for the attack.

- Warsaw / Poland : The People's Republic of Poland recognizes the German Democratic Republic as a sovereign state .
Wednesday October 19, 1949
- Bonn / Germany : The Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture Wilhelm Niklas ( CSU ) announced the size of the food imports into the Federal Republic in the opinion of the Ministry in the 1949/50 financial year. The state reckons u. a. with the import of 9.4 million tons of grain and 410,000 tons of fats .
- Cologne / Germany : Representatives of 32 business associations in the Federal Republic of Germany found the committee for economic issues of the industrial associations . Then there is a reception where u. a. the Federal Minister of Economics Ludwig Erhard ( CSU ) is present.
Thursday October 20, 1949
- Japan : US and international courts are dropping trials against Japanese war criminals .
- United States : Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver submit a procedure to the patent office in which information is represented in binary encryption as bars of different widths . The data is later recorded and decrypted by the optical reader that was also submitted .
Friday October 21, 1949
- Bonn / Germany : In the Bundestag , Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer ( CDU ) formulated the Federal Republic's sole right of representation for the “ German people ”, since the FRG embodies the only democratically “legitimized state organization” in Germany. The German Democratic Republic , which he does not mention by name, is not supported by the population “in the Soviet zone”.

- New York / United States : The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Trygve Lie lays the foundation stone for the new UN headquarters on the East River .

- Berlin / Germany : In an article in the SED party newspaper Neues Deutschland , the President of the GDR Wilhelm Pieck invites the federal government to start negotiations on the unification of Germany .
- Ludwigshafen am Rhein / Germany : The working group of the 79 chambers of industry and commerce of the Federal Republic come together for the Verin German Industry and Trade Day . 14 years earlier, the predecessor association became de facto incapable of acting as a result of its incorporation into the Reich Chamber of Commerce of the German Reich .

- Paris / France : The founder of the People's Republican Movement party, Georges Bidault , succeeds Henri Queuille from the Republican, Radical and Radical Socialist Party as President of the Council of Ministers .
Sunday October 30, 1949
- Brussels / Belgium : The Federal Republic of Germany is admitted to the European Economic Council , in which the decisions about the distribution of US reconstruction aid for Europe are made according to the Marshall Plan .
Monday October 31, 1949
- Bonn / Germany : Bonn becomes an occupation-free zone. The Belgian armed forces in Germany relocate their headquarters from Palais Schaumburg in Bonn to Cologne .
