Heinrich Schneider graduated from high school Fichtnergasse in Vienna- Hietzing and went after his matriculation examination as a novice in the Benedictine Abbey Seckau , which he by the People's breviary of Seckauer monk Hildebrand Fleischmann and retreats at Lawrence Hora OSB had met. He received the religious name Severin - after the late antique saint , missionary and monastery founder Severin von Noricum . Following his profession on December 4, 1951, he studied philosophy and Catholic theology in the Archabbey of Beuron and was ordained a priest on September 23, 1956 . He completed his subsequent studies in German and philosophy at the University of Graz in 1968 with a doctorate .

He worked as an educator and professor for religion, German and philosophy at the Abteigymnasium Seckau , of which he was director from 1980 to 1996. After the death of Abbot Athanasius Recheis OSB Severin took Tailor of 1997 and 2000 as Prior - Administrator directing the Seckauer monastic community whose sub-prior and prior he was already many years before that. From 2001 to 2006 he held the position of cellar in the monastery .

Severin Schneider's pastoral activity was characterized by great diversity over many decades: he promoted the lay apostolate , was involved in the Catholic university community , took over the role of spiritual assistant general of the Catholic Action in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau from 2001 to 2006 and held out well beyond the Countless retreats and retreats beyond Austria's borders . For many years he also acted as a dispenser of the Sacrament of Confirmation with a special commission from the Styrian diocesan bishop .

Not only his love and loyalty to the Liturgy of the Hours were formative for his life , but also his extensive enthusiasm for photography . His camera accompanied him everywhere . Again and again he found motifs with an eye on the essentials, which he also knew how to put into appropriate words. Severin Schneider, as director of the Abteigymnasium Seckau, set up a small Photographica Museum for his students and since 1992 has been publishing the Seckau calendar, which he founded and which is published annually, with mostly photographs that he created himself, whereby the respective subtitle of the calendar is the chosen focus of the photographs designated (e.g. roofs , testimonies , ignored ...).

The interaction of word and image is exemplified in two books he wrote, the picture catechism Faith gives life meaning from 1978 and the illustrated book Weg Jakobsweg Lebensweg: Impressionen from 2009. The last-mentioned book (see also section: Publications ) shows a compilation of images and corresponding thoughts, created during three foot pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela , all of which Schneider carried out after he was 70 years old (2001, 2003, 2005).

“Experience teaches that words and images, supporting and complementing each other, tell people more than the word alone or the image alone. ... I think that our faith becomes more alive if you look at what is expressed in words in the picture and what is expressed in the picture clarified by the word. "

- Severin Schneider, from the foreword to the book Faith gives meaning to life. An image catechism .

The former Styrian diocesan bishop Egon Kapellari chose in 2016 as the cover picture for his book, which was published on his 80th birthday, Steps to the Middle. A review of a picture of the Seckau crucifixion group photographed by Severin Schneider .

Severin Schneider died on November 2, 2018 after a long illness in the Judenburg-Knittelfeld State Hospital . On November 10, 2018, the Archbishop of Salzburg Franz Lackner OFM celebrated the Requiem together with the emeritus diocesan bishop of Linz Maximilian Aichern OSB, the episcopal vicar of the Graz-Seckau diocese Heinrich Schnuderl , the members of the Seckau convent and many other priests, friends and companions in the Seckau basilica , then Schneider was buried at the Seckau local cemetery.
