action

Sløborn is a (fictional) German North Sea island near the border with Denmark. While there are reports in the media of an infectious disease occurring abroad, the pigeon flu , everyday scenes take place there: 15-year-old Evelin Kern notices that she is pregnant from her teacher Milan Gruber; her parents want to separate, partly because her mother is implementing a hotel project off the coast of Sløborn, but her father wants to work as a scientist in Berlin. The well-known author Nikolai Wagner is one of the visitors to the tourist island, who is here at the invitation of the bookseller Merit Ponz to hold a reading. Wagner is working on a new novel. He's broke, struggling with drug addiction, and writer's block. The Dane Magnus Fisker is returning to Sløborn to lead a rehabilitation project with juveniles who have committed criminal offenses and to help them fix a ramshackle homestead. Evelin stands up for her classmate Hermann, the son of the local policeman who is bullied by his classmates.

When a sailing boat runs aground on the island's coast, the young people Fiete, Louis and Ole, as well as Hermann, who also publishes a video of it, find the bodies of an American couple on board. They steal the couple's valuables and cell phones and leave the boat. With Hermann's help, Fiete finds recordings on the cell phone that prove that the couple fell ill and died of “pigeon flu”. Shortly afterwards, two of the three teenagers started showing symptoms. The two sick adolescents come to the hospital and one, Ole, dies after a short time. Other residents of the island who had contact with the infected also fell ill. Sløborn is cordoned off, blood tests, the obligation to wear masks and a curfew, which is restrictively enforced by the Bundeswehr , are ordered. A mutated variant of the virus is found at Evelin. Her lover Gruber dies, but she is apparently immune despite mild symptoms. She is therefore flown out of the island for further investigations.

She is taken to a clinic in Kiel, where she meets other patients who are apparently being investigated into the manufacture of an antidote that would lead to the death of the patient. In a panic, Evelin flees the clinic. She meets her father, who wants to take her to his laboratory in Berlin. She distrusts him too, flees his car and returns to Sløborn with the help of a fishing boat. There, resistance against the massive encroachments on their basic rights is forming among the island's residents . Together with Hermann Evelin finds out that the island should be evacuated in order to isolate all suspected cases of infection, whether infected or not, from the rest of the population. Evelin suspects that for the residents of Sløborn who have not yet been infected, this means certain infection and thus death. Because of this, she and her siblings evacuate, as does Magnus Fisker and his youth group. Fisker resists the Bundeswehr and is shot, so that Evelin, her brothers, Nikolai Wagner, who finished his novel on the island, and the group of young people are the only ones left on the island. In the bus with which the mother of the four children is being evacuated, one of the other passengers suddenly also shows symptoms of illness. It is true that the sick are not isolated from the healthy and that this was not planned. The further fate of the evacuated residents is not cleared up.

production

The series was originally the working title "Slow Burn" ( English for slow burning) as this to tell, according to author and director Christian Alvart the idea behind the series, a disaster in slow motion, made clear. From this the final name Sløborn developed, which is supposed to show the place of action in the border area to Denmark with the letter " Ø " . The series concept was designed for four seasons.

The shooting took place from August 28, 2019 on, among other places, on the East Frisian island of Norderney and in the Polish seaside resort of Sopot . Some scenes were taken at the former torpedo weapon area Hexengrund of the Luftwaffe- Munitionsanstalt 3 / I on the Putziger Wiek , part of the Gdansk Bay near Gdynia .

In post-production from December 2019 to the end of May 2020, some references to the current COVID-19 pandemic and its side effects were also discussed. For example, information on the current situation was indicated such as: “Should I drink disinfectant now?” However, ZDF's consideration of broadcasting the series at a later date due to the current pandemic was discarded.

And on Friday the half a million viewers mark was clearly exceeded. That helped the market share, which rose to more than three percent late in the evening. "

Reviews

"The series is a big event cinema with goose bumps."

- Peter Osteried for Cineman on July 23, 2020

“Exciting, multi-perspective, bitter and painful eight episodes (the first seven episodes 45 minutes, 60 minutes of the showdown in the eighth), which we can unfortunately understand very precisely in our present and from which we should learn a lot. "Sløborn": a must. "

- Viola Bolduan in Echo Online from July 22, 2020

“Sometimes 'Sløborn' seems like a teenage series crammed with talented actors and heartbreaking conflicts that happened to be set in the context of an epidemic catastrophe. But little by little, Alvart is moving the mechanisms of an increasingly hysterical community into the center of the action - and also a couple of highly interesting, even funny, adult characters. "

- Wolfgang Höbel in Der Spiegel on July 23, 2020

“The German-Scandinavian co-production 'Sløborn' approaches the tradition of British crime dramas such as' Broadchurch ',' The Bay 'or most recently' Flesh and Blood ', which are very entertaining precisely because the authors draw conflicts from the characters' psychology and Grant them, whether protagonist or antagonist , weaknesses as well as cognitive processes. The audience also has to be prepared for the fact that not all sympathetic figures are granted a happy ending. Also a feature of what, following the long practice of American television scientists, is classified as a quality series. "

- Harald Keller in Frankfurter Rundschau .de updated on July 24, 2020

"Big cinema. For eight hours. "

- Elmar Krekeler in the world from July 23, 2020

“'Sløborn' comes into the range with a warning. […] The 'duty to resist' shown here, the vigilante groups , the dystopian course still seem to come from the catalog of conspiracy myths from the right. What still catches the eye is the image presence of the car brand with the star. Without a Mercedes , little goes on the island of the doomed. For those who feel reassured: With all the blasts on Sløborn, one thing remains - German workmanship . The series itself collapses with a crash. "

- Heike Huperz in FAZ.net updated on July 23, 2020

“A deadly pigeon flu that terrifies humanity, a state power that enforces isolation with violence: The Sløborn series was written and filmed long before the corona pandemic. And yet you experience one or two déjà-vu in this ZDF series, which is extremely professionally produced. "

- Claudia Tieschky in the video column of Süddeutsche Zeitung on July 26, 2020
