The Snake River Valley AVA is a wine-growing region in the southwest of the US state Idaho and in eastern Oregon . The designation as a protected designation of origin is the result of a joint petition by the Idaho Grape Growers and Wine Producers Commission and the Idaho Department of Commerce and Labor . The petition was granted on March 9, 2007.

location

The recognized vineyards of the Snake River Valley AVA growing area are spread across the counties of Ada , Adams , Boise , Canyon , Elmore , Gem , Gooding , Jerome , Owyhee , Payette , Twin Falls and Washington , located in the southwest of Idaho , as well as the east of Oregon Malheur and Baker Counties . The eponymous Snake River forms the border between the two states in this area. In order to be able to use the name of the designation of origin, at least 85 percent of the vine material used for a wine must come from this defined zone.

climate

The Designation of Origin Snake River Valley AVA is located on the same latitude as the better-known, more eastern Umpqua Valley AVA wine region in Oregon. The vineyards of the Snake River Valley are, however, at an altitude of 800 to 1000 m above sea level. This means that the temperature difference between day and night is very pronounced. In addition, the mitigating influence of the Pacific Ocean, 640 km away, is less noticeable.
