The mask 2: The next generation (Original title: Son of the Mask ) is an American comedy film from 2005 by the director Lawrence Guterman . It is a sequel to The Mask (1994) .

action

The Nordic god Loki was sent to earth by his father Odin to finally find his mask so that it could no longer be dangerous for people after all the damage it has already done. The only problem is that he can't find them and one dummy after the other falls for it, which annoys Odin more and more. Meanwhile, somehow Otis, the Averys dog, was able to grab the mask and is storing it at home as a trophy. But the Averys have other problems than taking care of that. Tonya desperately wants a child from Tim, which Tim in turn refuses permanently, as he first wants to be successful in his job before he has offspring.

And so the comic artist Tim takes part in the Halloween company party of his employer Animagine , although he takes the mask with him against his will and for lack of costume. Unsuspecting that it is Loki's mask, he puts it on and changes immediately. But it helps because not only does it take the party to a new level, it gets promoted too, and it also makes Tonya pregnant at night. Unfortunately, it's not his seed that Tonya receives. It is the seed of the mask. And after a pregnancy with some strange occurrences, Odin is not at all thrilled that a child of the mask was born, so he sends Loki again to find not only the mask but also the child. So Loki gets a list of all newborns and looks for the child of the mask, which turns out to be more problematic than expected.

Tim also faces new problems. Not only does he have to finish his presentation under time pressure, Tonya leaves him for a week for New York and leaves him alone with Alvey. In order to be able to work in peace, he also puts Alvey in front of the television, where he watches cartoons like Woody Woodpecker and the Feuerstein family and gets ideas to drive Tim insane. And with his power, which he has as the son of the mask, he uses this and plays all the tricks. But also Otis, who digs the mask out of his doghouse, uses the power of the mask to play off his envy for the favor of Tim against Alvey and to eliminate him so that he can be Tim's only favorite again. And so both duel until Otis gives up.

In the meantime Loki has found Tim and Alvey and tries to get his mask back on by all means. In the end he kidnaps Alvey and in return demands the mask. But when Tim and Tonya, who has returned from New York, bring him the mask, he doesn't want to bring the baby out again, which is why he and Alvey flee. Tim puts on the mask and follows him through the city. The two then have a duel, where they find out that they have the same powers and are accordingly equally strong, which is why Loki suggests that Alvey should decide who he wants to live with, Loki or Tim. But when Alvey chooses Tim, Loki gets so angry that he tries to kill the entire Avery family.

But Odin appears and prevents him from doing so, believing that he has failed again to find the mask. Tim interrupts this argument in which Odin Loki loudly expresses his disappointment and hands over the mask with the hint that one only has one family and one should start living with it. Odin and Loki understand why they get along and quietly disappear again, while Tim and his family can also have a new happy life in addition to professional success.

Reviews

The film received extremely bad and scathing reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes website counted 6 positive out of 103 professional reviews, which corresponds to a value of 6%. The film was also received very badly by the general public, because at the same time only 31% of 35,950 users rated the film positively. This, in turn, is more than confirmed by the Internet Movie Database , another platform on which normal users can submit their film reviews, because almost 32,000 users gave the film an average of 2.1 out of 10 possible points, placing the film in 27th place 100 worst movies of all time here. (As of July 14, 2014)

Not only is the story reminiscent of the comedy Mr. Mom weak, said Michael O'Sullivan in the Washington Post , but also Jamie Kennedy "a tragically miscast." That is less because of him than because of the "material that is offered to him".

While in the predecessor The Mask there were certain reasonable basic rules that made the film look funny, the renowned film critic Roger Ebert summed up in the Chicago Sun-Times , The Mask 2 would be completely uncomfortable and would simply be “inappropriate, shocking, atypical, impolite and anything outside of any acceptable behavior ”.

In the liberal daily New York Times , Dana Stevens said that The Mask had at least one more story, while The Mask 2 was "an incorrigible mess, a computer-animated puppet theater without wit, heart and memorable performance".

The lexicon of international films meant that the film, intended as a “homage to the art of animation”, failed “because of its rough design and complete lack of charm”. Only "excerpts from old cartoons" could convince.

background
