founding

In 1901 the local chaplain in Frankfurt-Ginnheim Kurat Freidhof was given pastoral care for the Catholics in Eschersheim. As early as 1904, the first Catholic service since the Reformation was held in the premises of the Protestant school on the White Stone, built in 1902 . In 1907, the first planning began for the construction of a Catholic church in Eschersheim, which at that time belonged to the diocese of Fulda under canon law . The design for a neo-Romanesque church building comes from the architect Hermann Mahr , who received the building contract from the Episcopal General Vicariate in Fulda on November 17, 1910 . There, it was decided that the Church of the Holy. Joseph ordained to be.

After Eschersheim was incorporated into Frankfurt am Main, the first groundbreaking for the church took place on December 5, 1910. The foundation stone was laid the following March . The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on August 20, 1911 . On September 22nd, 1912, the five bells in the church with a total weight of 5597 kg were consecrated. On December 29, 1912, the assembly of the electorate Catholics Eschersheim took place to found the parish. In 1913, the official gazette for the Diocese of Fulda published the document signed by Bishop Joseph Damian Schmitt on the establishment of the Catholic parish in Eschersheim on January 15, 1913 and in 1914 the document on the establishment of the Catholic parish of St. Joseph on May 6, 1914. On May 10, 1914, the new church was consecrated by Bishop Schmitt in the presence of Lord Mayor Georg Voigt and other dignitaries. The first pastor was Rhaban Fröhlich, after whom a street in Eschersheim has been named since 1963 .

Pre-war period

On September 1, 1930, the Catholic parishes of the northern suburbs that had been incorporated into Frankfurt over the years, including the parish of Eschersheim, moved from the diocese of Fulda to the diocese of Limburg . In 1932 the first organ of the Späth organ building company was consecrated.

Second World War

In 1941 the organ was expanded by the Späth organ building company. In 1942, the community had to deliver four of the five bells for the metal donation of the German people . During the Second World War , the church suffered some minor damage in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main , with the entire windows being destroyed by an air mine on March 22, 1944 .

post war period

One of the bells given in the war was returned in 1947/1948. In 1948 the 16 windows in the central nave were temporarily re-glazed and in 1949 the lead glazing was renewed, but it was not until 1978 that the last windows could be replaced. In 1958 the church received a new bell from the FW Schilling foundry consisting of five bells. At the end of the 1950s, most of the war damage had been repaired and the parish hall and kindergarten could be opened. The exterior was renovated between 1965 and 1966. As a result of the liturgical reform by the Second Vatican Council , the pulpit and the altar in the high choir were removed from 1978 in the course of renovation work inside .

Exterior renovations were carried out again between 1988 and 1991, whereby the roof was partially renovated , but the roof structure was only extensively renovated in 2000.
