St. Georgen is a place in the market town of Dießen am Ammersee and a district in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech .

history

Legend has it that a Count Rathard founded a monastery in St. Georgen as early as 815 , which was destroyed by the invading Hungarians in 955 and then rebuilt in the 11th century. In 1132 Otto and Berchtold von Dießen relocated the monastery to its present location, outside of the actual place.

Through the donation of Count Heinrich von Dießen-Andechs , St. Georgen fell to the Dießen Monastery in 1157 and remained part of the Hofmark Monastery until the secularization in 1803 .

In the course of the municipal edicts, the municipality of St. Georgen was established in 1808/18 with the districts of St. Georgen, Hofmarksgasse , Wengen , Bischofsried , Seehof and Ziegelstadl . In 1889 the community had 190 properties. The 1939 census showed a population of 1,345, of whom 517 were employed in agriculture .

Other important branches of business were the rich clay, loam and lime stores and the associated pottery , the monastery brewery operated until 1906, from 1884 the chip factory in Buz, the Georgenwerk and several armories.

The previously independent community of St. Georgen was incorporated into Dießen am Ammersee on April 1, 1939. The town of St. Georgen has now merged with the main town of Dießen and was last listed in the town directory in 1964 as an officially named part of the municipality.

Attractions

The name-giving church of St. Georg is located in St. Georgen. This was the parish church for the whole of Dießen from 1132 to 1804, since then it has been a subsidiary church . The late Gothic hall building, which still exists today, was built around 1500, and in 1750, probably by Johann Michael Fischer , was extended to the west and refurbished.

The church was renovated outside in 1980, inside in 1999 and 2010. The walled high cemetery is the oldest burial place in Dießen, next to the church portal there is an ossuary .
