The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Wertingen , a municipality in the district of Dillingen an der Donau in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , goes back to a Romanesque church. After being destroyed several times, today's church was built around 1700 in the Baroque style. Unusually, the two towers, with a saddle roof covered and battlements are crowned.

history

Because of the patronage of St. Martin , one assumes a very old parish , the history of which goes back to the time of Frankish rule. In 1269/71 Wertingen was first referred to as an oppidum , a city. The oldest surviving impression of the town seal from 1297 already contains a picture of a church. The seal from 1298 shows a two- tower Romanesque basilica , the towers of which are covered by a tent roof. A similar image can also be found on the seal of a document from 1374.

After the city burned down during an attack by Ludwig the Rich , Duke of Bavaria-Landshut , the church towers were rebuilt on the Romanesque basement floors and a new choir was built. This Gothic style church was also burned down when the Swedes occupied the city during the Thirty Years War .

In 1648, the reconstruction of the church in the Baroque style began according to the plans of a master builder who has not been handed down. Around 1700 a new nave was built, which was furnished with rich stucco decoration by Wessobrunn artists .

Nave with organ gallery

architecture

The single-nave nave is divided into three axes and covered with a flat barrel with stitch caps . A short transept separates it from the long, narrow choir. The retracted choir, closed on three sides, also has a barrel vault with stitch caps. It is illuminated by large arched windows, oratorio boxes open to the right and left . The western end is formed by a double gallery , with a straight parapet below and a curved parapet above , which rests on wooden pillars. The organ is located on the upper gallery .

Stucco decor in the choir with ceiling painting

Piece

A rich stucco decoration of foliage, acanthus tendrils , flower wreaths and garlands covers the ceiling of the nave and the choir. Flower vases, figures and angel heads are embedded in between.

Ceiling pictures

The central ceiling painting of the choir depicts the patron saint of the church, St. Martin who is taken into heaven by Christ. An angel holds a goose, the attribute of the saint. The scene is framed by oval portraits of the four occidental Doctors of the Church Ambrose of Milan , Augustine of Hippo , Hieronymus and Pope Gregory I. The grisaille under the stitch caps tell episodes from the legend of St. Martin.

In contrast to the rest of the decor are the ceiling paintings of the nave, which were executed by Franz Klemmer (1879–1964). One painting shows the three blessed of the Zusamtal (Albert von Wörleschwang, Gisebert from Zusmarshausen and Siegelbert von Oberhausen, today's Altenmünster). The other picture shows St. Ulrich at the battle on the Lechfeld , in the background the city of Augsburg can be seen.

Gallery pictures

During the interior renovation in 1975, the paintings on the lower gallery parapet were exposed. They represent Mary and the Fourteen Holy Helpers and are made in the style of the Nazarenes .

organ

The organ was installed in 1972 by the organ building company Sandtner in Dillingen.

Furnishing

  • The group of sculptures of the Lamentation of Christ (around 1500) above the sideboard in the choir and the baptismal font from 1577 on the left in front of the steps to the choir come from the previous Gothic church .
  • The pulpit , the altars and the church stalls were commissioned from Baltasar Amann in 1710.
  • The main altarpiece was executed by Bernhard Mittermayr at the end of the 18th century and depicts the Last Supper . The scene of the washing of the feet is reproduced on the antependium .
  • A painting on the outer left side altar recalls a legend from the life of St. Anthony of Padua , according to which a man mocked that he only believed in the presence of God in the host when his donkey kneeled down before her. The picture shows St. Anthony with a monstrance and the donkey kneeling in front of it.
  • On the walls there are 15 stations of the cross in rural painting.
  • A rosary Madonna is depicted on one painting .
  • Two images of fasting are works by Johann Baptist Enderle (1725–1798).
  • Many church chair signs are still preserved on the pews . The oldest date from the 18th century.
