The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Matthew (mostly short Matthäuskirche called) in Erlangen was after about two and a half years of construction on April 3, 1960 inaugurated . The modern church building with free-standing bell tower and outbuildings stands today as an important representative of Erlangen's post-war architecture under monument protection . Due to its excellent acoustics , the St. Matthew's Church is known as the " oratorio church " and is often used for concerts .

The south-facing, rectangular building with a gently sloping gable roof was built according to the plans of the Munich architect Gustav Gsaenger and is stylistically based on the early Christian Italian sacred building . It consists only of a 53 meter long, 15 meter wide and approximately 12.50 meter high nave and has no separate choir . The nave offers around 900 seats. The altar area including the organ is arranged on the south side; this is several steps higher than the ship. There is a double gallery on the north side of the nave . With the exception of the high side choir windows and a rose window on the north side, the church interior is only illuminated by a row of windows in the upper wall section. The two flat barrel vaults made of larch wood , asymmetrically arranged in the longitudinal direction and resting on six slender round supports, divide the nave into the main aisle and the aisle. The pulpit is adorned with a relief made of red marble , which was created by the Erlangen sculptor Christian Wrede . It shows a pelican feeding its young, a symbol of Christ's love for people.

The free-standing bell tower, a so-called campanile , is located near the southeast corner of the nave. Without the crowning, 8.50 meter high cross, it is 45 meters high. Above the tower clocks , which are attached on all sides , it opens through two sound openings on each side .

In addition to the nave and the campanile, the ensemble also includes the two-winged parish hall on Rathenaustraße, built in 1964 , which, together with the nave, encloses a small, green courtyard, as well as the rectory on Emil-Kränzlein-Straße. In addition, the parish of St. Matthäus owns two children's houses, consisting of a crèche and a kindergarten , one on Emil-Kränzlein-Strasse and one on Am Röthelheim. Together with the Stadtjugendring the community also operates the Stadtteilhaus meeting Röthelheimpark in Schenkstraße.

The organ of the parish church St. Matthäus was built in 1961 as Opus 4096 by the company EF Walcker & Cie. created from Ludwigsburg . It has its place behind the chancel. The abrasive loading -instrument with mechanical play and electrical register contracture comprises a total of 46 registers on three manuals and pedal . The modern concert organ is in poor condition; it is to be replaced by a new instrument by July 2021 (status: May 2020). Since the prospectus designed by the architect Gustav Gsaenger is a listed building, it has to be reused for the new organ. Therefore, the old organ is expected to be dismantled in July 2020 so that the prospectus can be restored and prepared for the installation of the new organ . The old pipe material is to be used for the restoration of other Walcker organs from the 1960s.


Bells

The five bells of St. Matthew's Church form the largest and deepest ring in Erlangen. They were in the year 1961 by Georg Schäfer (1896-1975), the resident in the municipality holds the bearing manufacturer FAG ball Fischer , donated by the bell foundry Bachert in Karlsruhe made on 1 October of the same year ordained .
