The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Stephan , named after the holy deacon of the early Jerusalem community , is located in Heygendorf , a district of the city and rural community of Artern in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . The church belongs to the parish Allstedt / Wolferstedt in the parish of Bad Frankenhausen Sondershausen in the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

From the Romanesque predecessor only have foundations receive. The aisle church with its retracted choir tower was given its current shape during the reconstruction after 1687. At that time, three-axis extensions were added to the nave on both long sides , but these are shorter than the nave. The nave and the lower part of the choir tower are plastered except for the corner stones . The hipped roof reaching over the extensions is covered with beaver tails .

The top floor of the tower made of slated timber is dated by an inscription on the eastern part of the belfry with "1779 - 1780". Two chilled cast iron bells hang in it , which were cast by Schilling & Lattermann in 1930 . The bell storey has two paired sound arcades and a single one. It has an eight-sided curved hood , which is crowned by an elongated open lantern with a tower ball .

The tall, rectangular and square windows have partly wooden, partly stone and profiled walls . There are three portals on the south side . The western portal has a baroque entrance door with an oval window above it, it leads to the stairs of the built-in galleries. The middle portal is older, it has a cranked wooden garment and a two-winged baroque door leaf . The eastern portal has a stone drapery with an ornate keystone .

The central part of the nave is covered with a plastered, wooden and flat barrel vault that attaches over a profiled cornice . There are flat ceilings above the galleries . The wooden pillars of the galleries are connected by arched arcades . The color versions of the choir, the galleries and the ceiling are simplified today.

The baroque pulpit altar from 1592 is made of alabaster . The pentagonal pulpit has a relief of acanthus . It is flanked by Corinthian columns . On the side of the pedestals are life-size sculptures of two female virtues , denoted by inscriptions on the pedestal as love and faith. A life-size figure of the risen one stands on top of the arched field . Is located on the north wall of the choir a epitaph and a wooden, life-size crucifix of 1615. On the south wall of the nave is a plaque made of alabaster mounted the stairs cultivation are two grave stones .

The organ behind the baroque parapet of the gallery has 15 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal , and was built around 1800 by an unknown organ builder .
