Welkow was trained up to the age of 18 at Slavia Sofia in the Bulgarian capital and then integrated into the squad of the club's first team. In his first season he was in central defense, came to 19 first division games and two games each in the cup and in the relegation round. Between July 2014 and 2015 he was out of action due to a serious knee injury, but was able to get back to the defense after completing his rehab. In the summer of 2016 Welkow was able to achieve his first league goal as well as his first two appearances in the European Cup when he failed with Slawia in the Europa League qualification against Zagłębie Lubin .

In his last season , the defender had to play with the club against relegation again, but won the national cup with him after a triumph over city rivals Levski in spring 2018 . The Bulgarian then signed a two-year contract with the Dutch second division club FC Den Bosch . Welkow was often taken into account there, but alongside regular Sam Kersten in central defense he was used in constant alternation with Leo Väisänen . Fourth in the championship had to play two promotion playoff games against the Go Ahead Eagles , one of which ended in a draw and the other was lost. In the second half of the following season , there was a loan to the first division promoted RKC Waalwijk , but due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Dutch championship was prematurely canceled in spring 2020.

After the end of his contract, the Bulgarian moved to Germany, where he was signed by the third division KFC Uerdingen 05 .
