List of land crosses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of hallway crosses contains crosses that stand or stood on paths or in the hallway. They are mostly made of stone, rarely metal or wood. They were probably mostly erected as atonement or in memory of those who died or died suddenly, or as a means of protection or prayer.

They are also referred to as wayside shrines , hail cross , Hussite cross , cross stone , Marterl , Mordstein , Schwedenkreuz , stone cross , expiation cross , wayside cross , weather cross or otherwise. Field crosses are particularly common in Central Europe.
