Stephen Weiss (born April 3, 1983 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The center played over 700 games for the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League between 2002 and 2015 . He spent most of his career with the Panthers, who selected him in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , where he holds the franchise record for most games.
Career
The 1.83 m tall center began his career in the 1997/98 season with the Toronto Young Nationals in the Greater Toronto Hockey League . This was followed by a season with the North York Rangers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . From 1999 Weiss played with the Plymouth Whalers in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . The striker had a successful rookie season with the Plymouth Whalers and finished the regular season in first place, for which the team was awarded the Hamilton Spectator Trophy . Especially in the playoffs for the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the attacker knew how to convince and formed a line with Justin Williams and Randy Fitzgerald that scored 35 playoff goals. However, Weiss failed with the Whalers in the final series in seven encounters against the Barrie Colts . At the end of the season, his achievements were recognized by the Ontario Hockey League with the inclusion in the First All-Rookie Team , as one of the best newcomers of the year to the league. In the 2000/01 season, the offensive player was the best scorer of the Plymouth Whalers with 87 points in the regular season, with whom he again reached the finals of the J. Ross Robertson Cup. As in the previous season, however, Weiss was unsuccessful and lost the final series with his team, this time against the Ottawa 67’s . In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in fourth position by the Florida Panthers .
The left-handed shooter completed his first NHL games in the 2001/02 season , and from the following season the Canadian was part of the Panthers' NHL regular. On February 1, 2003 he took part in the NHL YoungStars Game . During the 2003/04 season , Weiss also played ten games for the San Antonio Rampage , the Panthers' farm team at the time, in the American Hockey League , for which he was on the ice during the 2004/05 NHL lockout and which took him in this Season on loan to Chicago Wolves for 36 games . For the 2005/06 season Stephen Weiss returned to the Florida Panthers roster. That season he played 41 NHL games before a ligament tear in his left wrist put him out of action for several months. In the 2008/09 season , Weiss managed for the first time to achieve more than 50 points in the NHL and ended the regular season with 61 points. In September 2009, Weiss was named assistant captain of the team along with Cory Stillman .
In July 2013, Weiss signed a five-year deal worth $ 24.5 million with the Detroit Red Wings . The average annual salary was $ 4.9 million. After just two years, in June 2015, the Red Wings decided to buy him out of his contract in order to have more leeway in the salary cap . Then Weiss ended his active career.
Weiss was seen as a fast skater with good scoring skills, who served the team and also had above-average puck handling. His defensive behavior as well as the lack of physical assertiveness against stronger players was considered a weakness.
International
Weiss represented Team Canada at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2002 . In the course of the tournament, he was used in six matches and scored four points. The Canadians won the silver medal after losing to Russia in the final .
