Beach is a locality and settlement that belongs to the district Weißig of the municipality Struppen in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains in Saxony .

geography

The beach is located roughly in the middle between Königstein and Rathen on the left bank of the Elbe in its narrow valley that breaks through Saxon Switzerland . The area of the village, which is just a few hectares in size, is the only area of the Weißig district in the valley that is otherwise mostly on a flat surface . At this level, the terrain rises steeply to the north-west of the village in an approximately 100-meter-high step, a little further south-west in the area of the “Niedere Kirchleite” quarry, sometimes even vertically. On the other side of the Elbe, across from the beach, there is the Lilienstein , a 415 meter high table mountain . Other mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the vicinity are the Rauenstein in the northwest, the two Bärensteine in the west and the Königstein in the south with its famous fortress . The "Elblache Weißig-Strand" area natural monument is located directly on the banks of the Elbe . The pond biotope is around 330 meters long, has an area of around 1.2 hectares and was extensively renovated in 1995. An artificial dam separates the elongated Elbe pool from the Elbe.

The closest places are Weißig, whose center is 500 meters north, Thürmsdorf , which also belongs to Struppen (1.5 kilometers southwest) and the Bad Schandau district of Waltersdorf (two kilometers northeast). Neighboring to the south are the districts of Königstein Elbe (left Elbe) and Halbestadt and Ebenheit (both right Elbe). The corridors directly to the northeast belong to the Rathen district of Oberrathen . The beach, which consists of only a few houses, stretches along the Elbe Cycle Path and can only be accessed by residents by car. It is also accessible on foot from the direction of Weißig. The address of the property is simply "Strand" plus the respective house number. There is no direct connection to public transport , but the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt railway runs through the town. The tracks separate the settlement from the Elblache; Among other things, trains of the S-Bahn Dresden (line S 1) run on them , the next stop of which is Rathen, located around two kilometers to the north.

history

“Der Strandt” (top right) on a map from the Oberreit Atlas, mid-19th century
Seal of the community of Weißig with beach. Strands was incorporated into Weißig in 1865.

The place name is of Slavic and certainly Czech origin (the nearby Königstein fortress was Bohemian until the early 15th century ), although the evidence from this early period that is important for an exact derivation is missing. Its reconstructed original form is likely to have been * Straniščě and thus on * strana, German: ' Abhang, Leite ' (cf. Labská Stráň , also located in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains , German: Elbleiten, and the location of the beach under the "Niedere Kirchleite") go back. Accordingly, the place name means 'settlement on the edge (of the Elbe)' or 'settlement on the slope'. It was only later that the German word ' beach ' was used, whereby the proximity to the banks of the Elbe may have played a role.

The place name has been documented since the 15th century, initially as a field name, in 1428 as the "Strannische wiesenn" and 1466 as the "Strenisse wesse". The spelling "Strainisch wysen" is in use in 1548, the "Streinsche Wiese" is guaranteed in 1558. At the beginning of the 17th century, cottagers erected three buildings on these meadows, and by the 18th century the row of cottages that still exists today emerged. It was mentioned in 1755 under the name "Strand als Kirchlehen and with 9 beach houses" and in 1791 as "Strandgemeinde b. Königstein ”. The place was and is a parish in neighboring Königstein. Strand had the status of an official village in 1764 and was therefore directly subordinate to the Pirna Office in terms of manorial, hereditary court and administrative matters, and then to the Pirna Office on the left bank of the Elbe in 1816. Around 1830 the inhabitants of the place were mostly active as stone breakers, fishermen or bomber .

In connection with bank straightening to improve navigability, a dam was built between 1839 and 1842, which forced the Elbe into a narrower bed, separated today's Elblache beach and thus promoted the formation of the standing water. Before that, there was a so-called Heeger (a small Elbe island, see list of Elbe islands ) right next to the beach . The term “Strandfurt” or “Schnelle Furth” recorded on old maps indicates an old Elbe crossing at this point. However, the island was identified and dredged as an obstacle to drainage. Nevertheless, Strand was severely affected by the Elbe flood in 1845 . Around 1850 the railway line from Dresden to Bodenbach was built, which runs on the narrow strip between the town and the Elbe.

Originally, Strand with Hütten und Elbe formed a rural community until it was incorporated into Weißig in 1865 . The size of Strand's parcel corridor in 1843 was five hectares. In 1856 the place was part of the Königstein court office and in 1875 it was part of the Pirna administration . In 1900 there were 13 houses in the village. Five of these had to give way in the final phase of the Second World War after the Nazi rulers selected the neighboring quarry “Niedere Kirchleite” as the location of the Schwalbe II property in 1944 . Inmates from the Königstein satellite camp , the Sellnitz prisoner of war camp and other camps had to drive 20 tunnels into the quarry in order to set up an underground fuel factory there, which, however, was no longer in operation. At that time there were plans to demolish the entire beach area. After the end of the war, Strand became part of Weißig in 1952, initially to the Pirna district , in 1973 it was incorporated into Thürmsdorf , which was again added to Struppen in 1994 and then belonged to the Saxon Switzerland district . Since 1984 the inhabitants of the place celebrate their "beach festival" every year. The Elbe flood in 2002 also caused damage to the beach.
