Surfin 'USA is the second published on 27 March 1963 Music Album of the Beach Boys . The recordings took place in January / February 1963.

History of origin

Although Nick Venet is named on the back cover of the LP version as the producer, the album was produced by Brian Wilson . The Beach Boys had requested creative control over the further recordings in advance and successfully fought for it. This made them the first band to have complete control over their musical releases.

With the new freedom they also changed the studio, like the following albums Surfin 'USA was produced in the Western Studios in Hollywood .

With five instrumentals, Surfin 'USA is a rather atypical Beach Boys album. Except for Misirlou , Honky Tonk , Surf Jam (the first composition by Carl Wilson ) and Let's Go Trippin ' , all compositions are by Brian Wilson.

For the first time Roger Christian appears as a copywriter on this album . He was a DJ who made fun of the Beach Boys lyrics on his radio show, whereupon manager Murry Wilson made him an offer to write lyrics for the Beach Boys himself. This resulted in a successful partnership between Christian and Brian Wilson and Christian became a sought-after copywriter.

The album reached number 2 on the US Billboard charts and was on the charts for 78 weeks.

Additional information about the songs

Surfin 'USA , the title song of the album, was a big hit in the USA and reached number 3 in the charts and number 20 in the Black Music charts. In 1973 the song was re-released and reached number 36. In England, the Single released and reached number 34 there.

The title song glorifies the Surfing (English: surfing ) and performs many good surf spots in America. These places were named Brian Wilson by Jimmy Bowles, brother of his girlfriend at the time, Judy. In the credits of the published LP (Capitol T1890) only Brian Wilson is given as the composer. When the song became a success, Chuck Berry spoke up, seeing similarities in this piece to his hit Sweet Little Sixteen . Murry Wilson , who as Beach Boys manager also managed the rights to the songs, gave the entire copyright to Arc Music, the publisher who had the exploitation rights to Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry. That, both for the melody and for the lyrics that did not come from him. In the re-publications from 1970 onwards, only Chuck Berry is given as the author. Only in the course of the numerous lawsuits that were carried out in the 1990s for the rights to the Beach Boys songs was the credit corrected to Brian Wilson / Chuck Berry (the first time in 1993 on Good Vibrations - 30 Years Of The Beach Boys box set (Capitol C2 0777 7 81294 2 4)). However, this has not been changed on all new releases. In the new millennium, Mike Love claimed he wrote the lyrics for this song.

Farmer's Daughter , Noble Surfer and Finders Keepers are the first songs written by Brian Wilson alone.

Misirlou and Let's Go Trippin ' are covers by surf guitarist Dick Dale . Misirlou is based on a Greek folk song.

Lonely Sea is the first song Brian Wilson and Gary Usher wrote together. The 1962 recordings were produced by Murry Wilson

Shut Down is the first Brian Wilson / Roger Christian collaboration. The song reached number 23 on the charts as the B-side of Surfin 'USA .

Honky Tonk was originally written by Bill Doggett from 1956 and was one of the first rock 'n' roll - Instrumentals , were the hits. The song reached number 2 on the singles chart in 1956. The Beach Boys were the first surf band to cover the piece.

Surf Jam is the first Beach Boys song to be released by Carl Wilson as the sole author. The song was already recorded as part of the negotiations with Hite Morgan. Hite Morgan then signed the Beach Boys and released their debut single Surfin ' . Carl Wilson had previously written a song called Beach Boy Stomp , but it wasn't released until 1969 on the Beach Boys Biggest Beach Hits compilation .

Finders Keepers is an answer to Big Girls Don't Cry by The Four Seasons .
