action
Bay Kennish is the daughter of Kathryn and John, businessman and former professional baseball player, who live in the upscale Mission Hills neighborhood of Kansas City , Kansas with Bay's brother Toby. One day in class, Bay finds out that she doesn't have the same blood type as her family. Kathryn and John investigate and learn that Bay is not their birth daughter. They also find out that Bay and Daphne, who were both born on the same day, were accidentally switched in hospital.
Daphne Vasquez lives with her single mother, Regina, a former alcoholic, and her Puerto Rican grandmother in a working-class neighborhood called Riverside in Kansas City , Missouri . By meningitis in children Daphne has lost her hearing and visited since Carlton, a school for deaf children, in which she plays basketball.
When the two families meet for the first time, the Kennishs learn that Regina has financial problems. That's why they offer her to move rent-free into a neighboring house that they own. This gives Bay and Daphne the opportunity to meet their birth parents. Regina and Bay soon discover that they have the same passion for art. Bay is also keen to find out who her birth father is, but with little success. During the course of the first season, Bay falls in love with Daphne's best friend Emmett Bledsoe, with whom Daphne later also falls.
Daphne finds out that her mother Regina has known since she was three that she was not her birth mother. Regina also collected photos of Bay for years. The Kennish family has many complaints about Regina and Daphne and interferes in Daphne's upbringing. In the semifinals, Bay's biological father Angelo Sorrento appears, and Regina's secrets are revealed.
The main theme of the series is cultural conflicts between hearing and deaf people with the secondary theme of class conflicts between rich and poor. Numerous clashes are discussed, e.g. For example, the question of whether deaf people are allowed to drive motorcycles at all or the argument between mothers Kathryn and Regina as to whether Daphne should have a cochlear implant or not.
production
In February 2011, ABC Family announced that the pilot Switched at Birth would be ordered as a series. Katie Leclerc , Lea Thompson and Constance Marie were signed for the series in November 2010 . On August 1, 2011, ABC Family ordered 22 additional episodes that will be added to the first season.
In mid-August 2012, ABC Family ordered a second season consisting of 21 episodes. Almost a year later, the station announced the production of a third season.
