Tóth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tóth (also Tót , Tot , Toth ) is an old Hungarian word for an autochthonous Slav from the Kingdom of Hungary . Over the centuries, however, the word changed its meaning and was then later, up to the beginning of the 20th century, mostly used as a name for the Slovaks , but up to the early modern period also for the Slavons and partly also for Slovenes. Today this term is pejorative; the current Hungarian name for Slovene is szlovén , for Slovaks szlovák , for Slavone szlavón . Tóth in different spellings is also a common surname in the countries of the former Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy as well as in the countries to which the inhabitants of these countries emigrated.
