Tonali ( spelling : TONALi ) is a cultural and educational project based in Hamburg , which has been awarded the ECHO Klassik 2017 and aims to promote young musical talent and strengthen an open society of free and initiative people. Tonali was founded in 2010 by the two cellists Amadeus Templeton and Boris Matchin , initially as an instrumental competition . Tonali is now a year-round and international project that cooperates with well-known concert halls , festivals , colleges and universities. Honorary President is Christoph Eschenbach . One of the patrons was Monika Grütters .

Instrumental competition

The instrumental competition has been the core of the project since 2010. The classical music award endowed with 30,000 euros under the honorary presidency of Christoph Eschenbach is announced annually alternately for cello, violin and piano. The prerequisite for participation is that the young musicians study in Germany, Switzerland or Austria and are between 16 and 26 years old. Prize money totaling 18,000 euros goes to the winners. The main prizes have been provided annually since 2010 by the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation. The first prize is endowed with 10,000 euros, the second with 5,000 and the third with 3,000 euros. In addition, there is the creative prize endowed with 6,000 euros, the Mieczysław Weinberg prize endowed with 3,000 euros , donated by Peermusic Classical, and the audience award endowed with 3,000 euros, which is voted on in the final via SMS voting. During the event period, the musicians have to pass three art days, which they can design completely freely. The Tonali Festival has been taking place alongside the instrumental competition since 2015. The concerts, which take place in the evening at unusual locations in Hamburg after the competition rounds, are artistically designed by former and current Tonali participants (TONALiSTEN).

Public academy

A sub-project of Tonali is the public academy that operates in Hamburg and internationally. It brings young people from secondary schools to learn the basics of culture and music management. 500 “student managers” trained by the academy organize around 120 classical concerts for 40,000 classmates and their parents, acquaintances, friends and an interested audience in 70 schools, festivals and concert halls every year. The concerts of the Tonali Academy always take place in the school and out-of-school context. The aim of the public academy is the unconditional participation of a young generation in the creation of classical music, which is played and conveyed by highly talented musicians of the same age.

Composition competition

Tonali awards a composition prize every year . Participating composers must be domiciled in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and not older than 40 years. Solo pieces are submitted for the respective competition instrument. At the beginning of the Tonali year, an international jury of experts will determine the winner of the Tonali Composition Prize after examining all the documents submitted.

In addition to the double performance of the winning composition as part of the Tonali Festival and Competition, the winner receives the publication of his composition in the Hans Sikorski Music Publishers . The composition prize, endowed with 4,000 euros, is donated by the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation: each of the three finalists receives a cash prize of 1,000 euros, the winning composition is rewarded with an additional 1,000 euros.

Classic in your neighborhood

The urban Tonali festival “Klassik in Deine Kiez” has existed since 2014 and takes place every November in cooperation with 12 organizers in Hamburg. The 12 experimental and partly interdisciplinary concerts take place on ships, in cultural centers, clubs and theaters in various Hamburg districts. For each of the twelve locations, around 100 Hamburg student managers develop an organizational framework as well as marketing ideas and advertising campaigns for the concerts as part of an extracurricular learning location . The festival principle applies: young organize, play, listen. The festival's programs focus on the instrument that was the competition instrument that year, i.e. alternating piano , violin and violoncello . Performers are the young Tonali musicians who take part in the academy in Hamburg.

Tonali hall

On January 24, 2018, the Tonali Hall in Hamburg was opened with a concert with the violinist Lisa Batiashvili and the tonalist Elene Meipariani as well as NDR Kultur . The building, built around 1890 as a horse stable with a coach house, has a multimedia-equipped concert hall for 100 people, a foyer, an artist's cloakroom, multifunctional ancillary rooms, a bar, toilets and a terrace. Concerts, workshops, lectures and seminars shape the calendar of events. Around 50 public events take place every year. The management concept of the hall integrates student managers into the organization as part of an extracurricular learning location. The hall is located in Kleiner Kielort 3–5 near the Grindelviertel . Until 1938 the premises were owned by the Guggenheim family from Hamburg , who ran a liquor and confectionery business here.

TONALiSTEN agency

In 2016 the non-profit artist agency TONALiSTEN was founded jointly by Tonali, HarrisonParrott (Sabine Frank) and Hanni Liang . What makes it special is that cultural education is promoted in three ways through a circular principle : patrons and cultural shareholders promote the agency , the agency promotes young musicians, the musicians build a young classical audience. All of this happens with no commercial gain. As of 2019, 40 musicians will be represented at cooperation partners such as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival , the Tonhalle Zurich , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , Podium Festival Esslingen , the Copenhagen Summer Festival , the Capetown Philharmonics , in the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theater , perform at Ferrara Musica or the Alte Oper Frankfurt . In 2017, a non-profit cultural shareholder model was set up in which foundations, patrons and festivals acquire “cultural education” as a return.

Tonali tour

The “Tonali Tour” was developed as an educational project to interest young people beyond the borders of Hamburg in accordance with the Tonali principle in classical music. Tonalists from the artist agency play chamber concerts around the world. On-site student managers are trained by Tonali and / or the organizer to take on the artist management, advertising and concert implementation. Partner so far in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Russia, Poland, USA, Great Britain, China

Tonali orchestra

The TONALi Orchestra was founded in 2019 . Its 40 participants are largely made up of former Tonali competition musicians and other highly talented young musicians. The debut concert has been announced for June 19, 2020 [out of date] in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg . The conductors Christoph Eschenbach and Garrett Keast were entrusted with the management . The world premiere of the work BeEnigma , commissioned by Tonali from the composers Peter Ruzicka , Manfred Trojahn , Judit Varga , José M. Sánchez-Verdú and Eivind Buene, as well as the poetry slammer Timo Brunke, consists of five composition parts of ten minutes and one ten-minute each Contains text part. As part of the first tour, the orchestra will also perform in the Cologne Philharmonic , in the KKL Lucerne and in the Malzfabrik in Berlin.

Artist Advisory Board

Important artists such as Lisa Batiashvili , Martin Grubinger , Janine Jansen , Paavo Järvi , Igor Levit and Kirill Petrenko are represented on the artist advisory board . The artist advisory board has a representative function for Tonali: program aspects for the competition announcements are advised as well as selected Tonali musicians who introduce themselves personally.
