Taşköprü is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the northern Anatolian province of Kastamonu .

location

Taşköprü is located in the Black Sea region on the D030 trunk road, about 38 km east-northeast (71 °) from the provincial capital Kastamonu. The area is dominated by agriculture. Agriculture and livestock farming are the main sources of income. The city lies in the river valley of the Gökırmak (the ancient Amnias) .

The current name means "stone bridge" and goes back to the 70 m long historical bridge over the river. For a long time the year of construction of the bridge was based on an erroneous reading of an inscription. According to recent studies, the inscription has nothing to do with the stone bridge. The pillars of the bridge, built with marble polish, may date back to Roman times. The bridge itself was renovated and changed again and again after flood disasters. Its current appearance probably goes back to a renovation at the end of the 19th century. During the most recent restoration work by the state road construction authority, the keystone of the central arch came to light, on which there is a Middle Byzantine relief cross (7th – 11th centuries).

The place was founded in 1869. After a fire in 1927, the city streets were laid out at right angles.

district

The largest district of the province is located in the southeast of this region and borders on Tosya district in the south, the central district ( Merkez ) Kastamonu in the west, Devrekani district in the northwest, Çatalzeytin district in the north and Hanönü district in the northeast and Boyabat district ( Province Sinop ) in the south and the circle Kargı (province of Çorum ) in the southeast.

At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town (with 43% of the district population) and 126 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 175 residents. The scale of the population ranges from 1,166 ( Alatarla ) to 40 ( Hacıali ). The population density (22) is below the provincial average (29.3 inh. Per km²).

The Karadere Dam is to the northwest of Taşköprü .

archeology

Taşköprü is partly built on the ancient city of Pompeiopolis , which was built by Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus in the 1st century BC. Was founded and named after him. In the summer of 2006, an interdisciplinary international research project to explore the ancient Pompeiopolis began under the direction of Latife Summerer, based on the Institute for Classical Archeology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
