The Many Saints of Newark is an upcoming US prequel film directed by Alan Taylor and tells the story of the history of the HBO series The Sopranos .

The film was originally scheduled to open in US cinemas on September 25, 2020 and in German cinemas on October 1, 2020, but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . March 12, 2021 was announced as the new US launch date.

The focus of the story is the Mafia soldier Richard "Dickie" Moltisanti from the infamous Soprano Crew founded by "Johnny Boy" Soprano and part of the DiMeo Mafia family founded in the 1950s .

In March 2018, New Line Cinema and Sopranos inventor David Chase confirmed that, in collaboration with Lawrence Konner, a screenplay for a Sopranos film called The Many Saints of Newark had been written as a cinema adaptation, which tells a history of the series and dates back to the 1960s -Years ago.

In July 2018, Alan Taylor , who has directed nine episodes of the series, was officially confirmed as director for the film.

The actor Alessandro Nivola was engaged for the film in November 2018 and was given the lead role for the character Richard "Dickie" Moltisanti in the series, murdered in the mid-1970s by a corrupt police officer and later by his son Christopher Moltisanti with the death of the police officer was avenged.

Jon Bernthal , Vera Farmiga , Corey Stoll and Billy Magnussen joined the cast in January 2019. A few days later it was announced that Michael Gandolfini , son of James Gandolfini who played the adult "Tony" soprano in the series, would play the younger version of "Tony" soprano. A month later, in February 2019, Ray Liotta was also engaged for the film.

In early March 2018, a first release date was announced, dated September 25, 2020 and shortly thereafter the actors John Magaro and Leslie Odom, Jr., who were hired for the film . Also Michela De Rossi was engaged in the same month for a previously unknown major role.

The shooting of the film began on April 3, 2019 Brooklyn ( New York City ) and were in May 2019 to Newark (New Jersey) laid. On June 13, 2019, set photographer Barry Wetcher announced that filming was over.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the release of the film has been postponed and the new US release date has been announced as March 12, 2021.

"Chickie" Sasso
In a memory by Tony Soprano, his father was arrested in 1967 along with his uncle Corrado John "Junior" Soprano and another Mafioso called Chickie Sasso. The latter is a maternal cousin of Tony's father and is portrayed in the film by Danny Schoch .

Satriale's Pork Store in Kearny , New Jersey (2007)

The fictional Satriale's Pork Store , a regular hangout for the soprano crew , was recreated in Paterson, New Jersey for the filming of the film, as the original building was recently demolished.

Another well-known location was the Holsten's Ice Cream Parlor and Eatery restaurant in Bloomfield, New Jersey , where the last scene of the last episode of the series was filmed.
