Thomas Fitch

Thomas Fitch (born January 27, 1838 in New York City , † November 12, 1923 in Decoto , California ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Thomas Fitch attended public schools in his home in New York. In 1855 he moved first to Chicago and a year later to Milwaukee . There he was from 1859 to 1860 editor of the newspaper "Milwaukee Free Democrat". In 1860 Fitch moved to California, where he edited the San Francisco Times and Placerville Republican newspapers. After studying law, he began working in his new profession in California.

Political career

Fitch became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1862 and 1863 he was a member of the California State Assembly . In June 1863 he moved to the Nevada Territory . There he was a member of the constituent assembly of the nascent state of Nevada in 1864. In 1865 and 1866, he was a district attorney in Washoe County . In the congressional elections of 1868, Fitch was elected to succeed Delos R. Ashley in the US House of Representatives. There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1869 and March 3, 1871. In the following congressional elections he was defeated by Charles West Kendall , the candidate of the Democratic Party .

After his tenure in Congress , Fitch returned to practice as a lawyer. In 1909 he moved to Los Angeles . There he wrote newspaper articles, among other things. Thomas Fitch died on November 12, 1923 in Decoto, now part of Union City.
