Thomas Sauerborn (born August 28, 1987 in Nürtingen ) is a German jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Sauerborn received piano lessons from the age of six. He is largely related to the saxophonist Heinz-Dieter Sauerborn . When he was nine years old, he switched to drums. Since the age of 13 he gained experience in local pop / rock, folk and jazz bands. From 2008 to 2010 he studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Marcel Serierse and Martijn Vink , before completing a bachelor's degree at the Cologne University of Music with Michael Küttner , Jonas Burgwinkel and Henning Berg until 2013. Between 2007 and 2010 he was the drummer in the LandesJugendJazzOrchester Hessen, directed by Wolfgang Diefenbach , with whom he recorded the albums Corazon Latino Especial and Tribute to Kenny Napper . From 2010 to 2011 he was a member of the Federal Jazz Orchestra . From 2014 to 2016 he completed his master's degree at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with Jakob Høyer, Kresten Osgood , Peter Bruun and Torben Snekkestad as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service .

Sauerborn's compositional work currently focuses on his trio pollon and the double trio Makkro . He is also the band leader of the German / Danish improvisation collective Mount Meander . He has also performed with musicians such as Claudio Roditi , Joe Gallardo , Jiggs Whigham , Herb Geller , Josee Koning, Jeff Cascaro , Jan Wessels, Steffen Schorn , Madeline Bell , the New York Voices , Gwilym Simcock , Matthias Schriefl , Joris Roelofs , Paul Heller , Lucas Leidinger , Felix Roßkopf and Bastian Stein . He can also be heard on several albums with the quartet Besaxung and the electro-hardcore band Monophonist . He is also a member of the Mengamo Trio and Willit Blend ( The Rainbow's End ), the bands of Stephanie Neigel and Christine Corvisier and the Subway Jazz Orchestra .

Concert tours have taken him to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Benin, Denmark, Greece, Lithuania, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the USA. He has appeared at international festivals such as the Moers Festival , the Eight Bridges Festival , Jazz Baltica and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival .

Sauerborn lives in Cologne .

Prizes and awards

In 2006 Sauerborn received the first prize in the solo competition of Jugend jazzt in Hessen. In the following years he and Philipp Gerschlauer's Besaxung won first prize in the same competition and in the national competition "Jugend jazzt".
