Jeroen Gebben ( VVD ) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since February 28, 2017 . His colleagues include the alderman Gelbrig Hoekstra ( CDA ), Romke Dijk ( FNP ), Andries Bouwman ( ChristenUnie ) and the community secretary Maaike van Gils.
Location and economy
The municipality is located east of the provincial capital Leeuwarden . Burgum is the main town; the village is located on the Van Harinxmakanaal , which is easily navigable for barges. The Leeuwarden - Groningen road also passes Burgum and Hurdegaryp. The Leeuwarden-Groningen railway runs through the municipality; the municipality's only train station is in Hurdegaryp.
As an administrative and supply center, Burgum has some industry and trade; There are several schools, old people's homes, shops, etc. in the village. Agriculture (livestock farming) and water sports tourism (Bergumermeer near Burgum) are economically important for the community.

Events
- In summer u. a. the Skûtsjesilen held on the Bergumermeer ; It is a multi-day sailing competition with 100-year-old sailing ships originally used as cargo boats (Dutch: schuitje, Frisian: Skûtsje)
- The Elfstedentocht , the famous speed skating marathon race, leads through Bartlehiem along the eleven Frisian cities .
