Timex Social Club was an American music group from Berkeley , California , which is assigned to the genres R&B , dance , post-disco and soul . The biggest hit is Rumors from 1986. Timex Social Club is considered to be the forerunner of the New Jack swing movement.

history

The band was founded, then still under the name Timex Crew, in 1982 by the student of Berkeley High School, Marcus Thompson. Gregory "Greg B" Thomas, Michael Marshall, Craig Samuel, Darrien Cleage, Alex Hill and Kevin Moore soon joined him, or rather made music with Thompson more or less regularly. 1986 Thomas, Samuel and Cleage left the band again, while Hill and Moore became more closely integrated and eventually became permanent members. The name Timex Social Club was adopted that same year. The style of the band specialized in old-school - hip-hop and fusion of R & B with hip-hop rhythms that New Jack Swing became known as.

Also in 1986, the album Vicious Rumors was released via Fantasy Records . The extraction Rumors made it to number 8 in the Billboard Hot 100 , number 13 of the UK charts , 11th in Germany and even No. 1 in Canada . Rumors also rose to # 1 on Billboard's US Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, Dance Music / Club Play Singles, and Hot Dance Music / Maxi Singles Sales. The two singles Thinkin 'About Ya and Mixed-Up World , released afterwards , once again reached the R&B Top 20 in the USA, but did not attract any great international attention. Thinkin 'About Ya was a success because the band Club Nouveau used passages from the title for their hit Why You Treat Me so Bad .

Rumors

The surprising and sudden success of the single Rumors called on the producer and co-founder of the Def Jam label , Russell Simmons , who booked the band as an opener for thirty-eight shows on the Raising Hell tour of the US rapper Run-DMC Other artists on this tour were the Beastie Boys , LL Cool J and Whodini .

Also due to the success of the single, Timex Social Club was able to support the likes of New Edition , Midnight Star , the SOS Band , Kool & the Gang and Jermaine Jackson .

Tours

The band can still be seen at concerts in the USA. Marcus Thompson (DJ) and Samuelle Prater (vocals) represent the current line-up. The band's published works are also still played in mostly American music shows, mostly in so-called old-school mixes. The band's songs were often used as samples, so among other things, 2Pac , Public Enemy and Master P .
