Tony Gustavsson (born August 14, 1973 ) is a former Swedish football player and current coach. In the Allsvenskan season in 2007, he was the first first division coach to graduate from an academic coaching degree. In 2012, he won the gold medal as an assistant coach at the Olympic football tournament, and at the end of the year he won the Swedish women's championship as head coach.

Career

Player career

Gustavsson started playing football at Söröje IF . In 1989 he moved to IFK Sundsvall , with whom he rose to the second-rate Division 1 Norra at the end of the 1990 season . Here he played until 1993 when he went to Florida for a year to join the Orlando Lions in the United Soccer Leagues . For the 1995 season Gustavsson returned to Sweden and joined the fifth division Stockiks FF . After one season he moved to the fourth division club FC Café Opera , with whom he made promotion to the third division as the season winner of Division 3 Norra Svealand . However, he left the club and hired the fifth division club Ytterhogdals IK . For the club he scored 38 goals in Division 4 Jämtland / Härjedalen in the 1997 season and thus helped him to move up to fourth division. Thanks to his scoring danger, the Allsvenskan club Hammarby IF invited him to a trial session, but he could not convince the first division club. In the 1999 season he joined the second division club IK Brage for one season .

Coaching career

Parallel to his footballing career, Gustavsson began an academic coaching course, which was started in cooperation with Svenska Fotbollförbundet , Örebro University and the Degerforser Football Academy. In 2000, he therefore returned to Ytterhogdals IK as a player- coach, where he worked for four seasons until 2003. In his first season, he led the now relegated club back to fourth division. There he reached midfield with the team, in 2002 three points were missing to reach the promotion round to the third division.

In the 2004 season Gustavsson joined the coaching staff of Degerfors IF as a playing assistant coach. In the third-class Division 2 Västra Svealand under coach Dave Mosson the promotion to the Superettan succeeded. After the rise, Mosson received no new contract and was inherited by Gustavsson as head coach. In the second division season in 2005 , he occupied the team two points ahead of Bodens BK, the last non-relegation place and led them to eleventh place in the table the following year.

Gustavsson won over those responsible for the first division club Hammarby IF, who announced in October 2006 that Gustavsson had been appointed as the successor to Anders Linderoth . He signed a three-year contract with the Stockholm Club. In his first season he led the champions from 2001 to sixth place in the table, in the following year the team placed ninth. In the 2009 season , the team slipped around players like Rami Shaaban , Sebastian Castro-Tello , Igor Armaş and the post-engagement Andreas Dahl in the relegation battle. Therefore, the club decided on August 31 to change coach, Thom Åhlund inherited Gustavsson.

In April 2010 Gustavsson started his first coaching position outside of Sweden when he took over the coaching post at the Norwegian club Kongsvinger IL . At the club that had been promoted from the Adeccoligaen to the Tippeligaen last year, he met his compatriots Conny Månsson , Bobbie Friberg Da Cruz and Edier Frejd . After his original contract was only valid until the summer break, the club extended it at the beginning of June until the end of the Tippeligaen season in 2010 . At the end of the season, the club missed relegation, and then announced his departure in November.

In April 2012, his compatriot Pia Sundhage brought Gustavsson to join her team as a special defensive coach for the US women's national team . In the summer he won the gold medal at the Olympic football tournament of the 30th Olympiad in London with the selection team around Abby Wambach , Carli Lloyd , Hope Solo and team captain Christie Rampone . Immediately afterwards he switched to Tyresö FF in Damallsvenskan as a trainer . Under his leadership, the team won the Swedish championship title at the end of the season in front of their tied competitor LdB FC Malmö and reached the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League in May 2014 . After the subsequent insolvency Tyresös Gustavsson moved again to the coaching staff of the US women's national team under the new head coach Jill Ellis .

other activities

Gustavsson worked as a commentator and expert for various television stations. At the 2010 World Cup , he supported Glenn Strömberg and Sveriges Television , and Canal + later hired him .
