The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led over a distance of 180.5 kilometers from Mourenx to Pau . The two cities are only about 25 kilometers apart, so the route made a considerable “detour” over various passes of the Pyrenees . The last notable pass, the Col d'Aubisque , was over 70 kilometers from the finish, which is why breakaway groups were given great chances of success.
The first attacks took place shortly after the launch. But it wasn't until kilometer 26 that an eleven-headed group was able to break away decisively; this group included Cadel Evans , Xabier Zandio and Juan Antonio Flecha . On the Col d'Ichère the lead over the field was 5:20 minutes, on the Col de Marie-Blanque 6:10 minutes. In the ascent to Marie-Blanque, Óscar Pereiro and Eddy Mazzoleni set out to chase the leaders.
The difficult climb up to the Col d'Aubisque led to a fragmentation of the individual groups. Evans came first on the pass, 47 seconds ahead of Pereiro and Mazzoleni. Behind them were individual drivers from the former group of eleven and finally, after 4:15 minutes, the group with the top overall. On the long descent down to Pau, a group of four with Evans, Mazzoleni, Pereiro and Zandio formed at the head of the race. Behind them, another group of eight drivers formed, with an average gap of two minutes.
In the sprint to win the stage, Pereiro prevailed and won the stage; two days earlier, the Spaniard had to be content with second place. The group of eight followed, 2:25 minutes behind, the field 3:26 minutes behind.
