The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2005 led over a distance of 212.5 kilometers from La Châtaigneraie in the Vendée department via Cholet and Chinon to Tours , the capital of the Indre-et-Loire department .

After 32 kilometers a group of three, consisting of Erik Dekker , Rubens Bertogliati and Nicolas Portal , had pulled away from the main field. After around 100 kilometers, the maximum advantage was 5:40 minutes. After that, the lead continuously melted away. Bertogliati dropped and caught up with about twelve kilometers from the finish. The other two drivers were overtaken almost two kilometers from the finish. At the same time, Fabian Cancellara launched one last attack, but could not break away.

As the day before, Belgian Tom Boonen prevailed in the mass sprint . The Australian Robbie McEwen bumped into his compatriot Stuart O'Grady and was put back in last place by the jury after the race. The two Austrians Peter Wrolich and Bernhard Eisel ranked 2nd and 4th.
