The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 13th was 224 kilometers long and ran from Toulouse to Bagnères-de-Bigorre . There were two sprint evaluations as well as four mountain evaluations of the 4th category, one mountain evaluation of the 3rd category and two mountain evaluations of the 1st category on the program.

Shortly after the start, David de la Fuente , Freddy Bichot , Stef Clement , Giampaolo Cheula , David Moncoutié and Björn Schröder tried to break away, but they did not succeed. Aljaksandr Kuschynski , Nicolas Jalabert and Sebastian Lang tried to escape successfully at kilometer 22 . They quickly gained a maximum advantage of 14:20 minutes. The field led by Euskaltel-Euskadi let the gap then slowly melt away again. Lang secured the first five, smaller climbs. Kuschynski and Jalabert each have a sprint rating. In the field, Cadel Evans fell on a motorcycle, but was able to continue with a few wounds and a torn jersey. Samuel Dumoulin and Romain Feillu tried to break away from the field, but also had to give up this company. On the climb to Col de Peyresourde , the field increased and it tore apart. De la Fuente, who was fighting for the dotted jersey , and Maxime Monfort attacked. At the top, Lang was able to break away from his two companions. There were several attacks by the favorites on the climb around Col d'Aspin . Luis León Sánchez was able to catch up with de la Fuente and Monfort. Then began a big attack by Riccardo Riccò , who overtook Lang before the summit and thus took the lead. All other drivers were swallowed up again by the field. Bernhard Kohl tried to secure the dotted jersey with a sprint on the last mountain Lang, but this failed because De la Fuente got the necessary points with fourth place. The finish in Bagnères-de-Bigorre was reached after a difficult descent through Campan on a 180 meter long and 6.5 meter wide home straight. There Riccò achieved the second stage victory. Wladimir Jefimkin crossed the finish line in second place before the field. Kim Kirchen was able to defend the yellow jersey and also stand out in the green jersey. Stefan Schumacher lost some time and so the third place in the overall ranking to Christian Vande Velde . Andy Schleck took over the white jersey from Thomas Lövkvist , who lost a lot of time. After the end of the Tour de France, Riccò was deprived of the stage win because of doping.
