The 5th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 6th led over 164.5 km from Carhaix to Cap Fréhel . On the stage there was a sprint classification and a mountain classification in the 4th category. 197 of the 198 registered drivers started.
Race course
A few kilometers after the start, Tristan Valentin was able to pull away , followed by José Iván Gutiérrez , Sébastien Turgot and Anthony Delaplace . The latter secured the only mountain point of the stage, while the distance between the group grew to over six minutes.
In the field, which was led by the Garmin-Cervélo team , there were several falls, especially after the intermediate sprint won by Sébastien Turgot in the breakaway and Borut Božič's field. Janez Brajkovič fell particularly badly and had to give up the race and be transported away by ambulance. In this fall, Robert Gesink also fell, but he was able to continue the race just like Alberto Contador shortly afterwards . With Christophe Kern , a second task was reported in these minutes. Shortly afterwards, Tom Boonen and Gert Steegmans also fell, but they were able to continue the race, with Boonen later crossing the finish line more than 13 minutes behind.
In the meantime, the accelerated travel of the field caught up with the outliers 45 km from the finish, which triggered further attacks, whereby Jérémy Roy and Thomas Voeckler were able to pull away . Due to the joint efforts of several teams, however, both were overtaken one after the other. Edvald Boasson Hagen attacked before the finish , but Mark Cavendish prevailed against Philippe Gilbert in the final sprint .
