The tourism in Bulgaria is divided into different areas, which include recreational and beach tourism, hunting tourism , winter sports and cultural tourism are. Since the late 1990s, especially mass tourism on the Black Sea coast has developed very strongly. In 2011 Bulgaria was visited by around 8.5 million tourists.

Bulgaria was visited by 10 604 396 foreign tourists in 2016, 6 208 793 of them from the EU.

In 2006, 4,267,461 foreign tourists visited Bulgaria by the end of September. These included 491,897 Germans, 287,320 Romanians, 201,283 Russians, 118,531 Czechs, 114,020 Poles, 81,708 Ukrainians, 54,549 Irish and 53,188 visitors from the United States. The number of visitors increased by 5.39% compared to the previous year. Over the first eight months of 2006, income from international tourism amounted to around 1.55 billion euros.

  • Rila Monastery : The monastery in the Rila Mountains of the same name is located 117 kilometers south of Sofia at an altitude of 1147 meters above sea level. It was founded by students of the hermit Ivan Rilski in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, the monastery received rich gifts from many tsars and became an important social and cultural center. The current shape dates from the 19th century, when the monastery was rebuilt after a fire, and is a typical example of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The Rila Monastery was added to the World Heritage List in 1983.
  • Boyana Church : 8 kilometers south of the center of Sofia at the foot of Mount Vitosha is the church, which was added to the UNESCO list in 1979. Originally conceived as a fortress, after extensions it is now a three-part church complex, which is known for a fresco from 1259. This is one of the most important examples of medieval Eastern European painting.
  • Iwanowo Rock Churches : This group of churches, chapels and monasteries was added to the World Heritage List in 1979. They are 22 kilometers in the southwest of Ruse and 73 kilometers (as the crow flies) from the old Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnowo. These are natural caves and their limestone extensions from the 13th to 17th centuries. The rock church of the Virgin Mary is the central church and has the most beautiful frescoes.
  • Old town of Nessebar : Located on a rocky peninsula, the old town of Nessebar was added to the World Heritage Site in 1983.   • Rock relief of the rider of Madara : The small village of Madara is about 18 kilometers from Shoumen and 62 kilometers from Varna (as the crow flies). Nearby is the 100-meter-high cliff, where the relief of a rider fighting a lion was probably carved in the 9th century AD. The Madara rock relief has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
  • Thracian grave of Kazanlak : About 30 kilometers from Stara Sagora in the middle of the Rose Valley is the city of Kazanlak, in the immediate vicinity of which the Thracian tomb can be found. Natural heritage

  • Srebarna Biosphere Reserve : It is a 900 hectare biosphere reserve on the border with Romania, about one kilometer south of the Danube and 19 kilometers from the village of Silistra.
