Transavia Airlines (originally Transavia Holland ) is a Dutch low-cost airline based in Haarlemmermeer and based at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol . It is a subsidiary of Air France-KLM .

history

Douglas DC-6 A of Transavia Holland in 1968

Transavia was founded in 1965 by a Belgian bicycle manufacturer and a Scottish businessman. Since the airline was based in the Dutch province of Limburg , they called it Transavia Limburg NV . The company was renamed Transavia Holland on July 15, 1966 and began flight operations on November 17, 1966.

In 1991 P&O Nedlloyd sold its 80% stake in Transavia Holland to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines . In June 2003 KLM took over the remaining 20% and Transavia became a subsidiary of Air France-KLM in 2004 as part of the merger of KLM and Air France .

In the early 2000s, the company also operated as a low-cost airline under the name BasiqAir . However, since January 1, 2005, flights in this business area have again been operated under the transavia.com brand . On May 12, 2007, the subsidiary Transavia France began operations with flights from Paris-Orly Airport .

The bankruptcy of the airline Sterling Airlines prompted Transavia at the end of 2008 to found the subsidiary Transavia Denmark with its headquarters and base in Copenhagen . However, this was dissolved again in April 2011 due to business goals not being met.

In March 2016, a new base with four Boeing 737-800s was opened at Munich Airport . At the beginning, 18 European destinations with 101 flights per week were offered, and 120 jobs were created at the airport. As a compromise with the Air France employees, there were no flights to France from Munich. The base at Munich Airport was closed again at the end of the 2017 summer flight schedule, only two connections from the Netherlands remained.

Destinations

Transavia operates scheduled flights to destinations across Europe from the four Dutch airports of Amsterdam , Eindhoven , Groningen and Rotterdam . There are also charter destinations in the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Canary Islands and in winter in the Alpine region.

Innsbruck , Salzburg and Vienna are served in German-speaking countries .
