The United States Climate Alliance (German: Climate Alliance of the United States) is a group of states in the United States that want to comply with the Paris Agreement , unlike the US government, by reducing their respective CO 2 emissions by 2025 a level 26–28% lower than in 2005. In addition, the alliance forms a group of states that want to plan and coordinate their climate protection campaigns together.

The member states have a total of 31.4% of the US population and 36.3% of the US GDP (as of 2016). They were also responsible for a total of 18.1% of emissions in 2014.

history

The group was formed on June 1, 2017, following the announcement made the day before by President Donald Trump that the United States would be terminating the Paris Agreement. The alliance was announced by three state governors : Jay Inslee , Governor of Washington State , Andrew Cuomo of New York State, and Jerry Brown , Governor of California . The latter two are getting involved, even though their states are going to have gubernatorial elections next year. The group does not make any legally binding requirements for its members; Instead, it should be a community of interests of countries with climate protection ambitions that contribute to climate protection on a voluntary basis. All three states are ruled by Democratic Party governors.

On the evening of June 1st, seven other governors agreed to continue supporting the Paris Agreement. Almost 70% of the American population and a majority in all 50 states were in favor of supporting the Paris Agreement.

On June 2, Governor Dan Malloy announced that Connecticut would also join the alliance. On the same day, Governor Charlie Baker and Massachusetts joined the first state to be led by the Republican Party . With Phil Scott from Vermont , another led by Republicans State of the Alliance joined. Thereafter, Rhode Island joined with its governor Gina Raimondo . Governor Kate Brown said Oregon would join the alliance. Governor David Ige of Hawaii announced Hawaii as the ninth member state of the alliance.

On June 5, Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Virginia would also join the alliance. Even if the governor's election in Virginia will take place in November of this year. Governor Mark Dayton with Minnesota , Governor John C. Carney with Delaware and Governor Ricky Rosselló with Puerto Rico also joined the alliance.

Maryland's Governor Larry Hogan also expressed his support for the Paris Agreement on June 1st , but has not yet made a final statement on Maryland's admission to the Alliance. In 2009, Maryland already exceeded the GGRA, which confirms the state had achieved a 25 percent reduction in emissions from 2006 to actually 2020. A new version was signed in April 2016, which aims to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030.

Minnesota's Governor Mark Dayton said no matter how devastating the decision may be, it will not deter Minnesota from its climate protection efforts. In 2007, Minnesota signed its own energy treaty that goes beyond the Paris Agreement and calls for a 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2025 and an 80 percent reduction by 2050.

Montana's Governor Steve Bullock called the retreat "myopic and dangerous." Last year, a separate energy deal was tabled.
