action

The lawyer Diane Lightson loses her boyfriend and a profitable business. She meets Chris Thorne, the wealthy editor of a magazine for financial investments , and plans to travel with him to Atlantic City the following day . At his party, Chris tells his two friends, siblings Renalda and Fausto Squiriniszu from Brazil, about his new acquaintance and his travel plans. The two are enthusiastic about the idea and want to go along. Chris thinks this is a joke at first and hopes to travel with the attractive Diane without them. But the next day, the two siblings are standing in front of the underground car park exit just as Diane and Chris want to start their journey.

The four first drive on a highway in the direction of Atlantic City. But they quickly get bored and persuade Chris to leave the autobahn and take a secondary route. You drive through run-down areas that are marked by mining , including the village of "Valkenvania". There Chris runs over a stop sign unnoticed , which initially has no visible consequences. But the village sheriff Dennis has noticed the violation and follows Chris. A chase ensues, which the sheriff can win with the help of his tuned vehicle and other technical tricks. For example, he can use an electrical device to activate an initially invisible roadblock, which forces the four of them to drive into an old mine area. There they are arrested by the sheriff and his employees.

Dennis takes her to an old house that is surrounded by a junkyard. You are initially imprisoned in a cellar and have to watch as judge Alvin Valkenheiser sentenced other traffic offenders to death in the "Bonestripper". This bizarre machine consists of a converted roller coaster with which the delinquents are transported directly from the courtroom to an oversized machine, where they are crushed by converted, rotating motor pistons . The four suspect that they will face a similar fate and are therefore all the more surprised when they are invited to dinner by the judge. There they get to know his silent and extremely burly granddaughter Eldona, who has been looking for a husband for a long time. In a scuffle, Renalda and Fausto initially manage to escape, but are caught again by Dennis. They bribe him and take him to South America, where they employ him as their bodyguard.

Judge Valkenheiser meanwhile demands that Chris marry his granddaughter after touching her in a scuffle. He pretended to accept the offer - in the hope of being able to escape the building alive. The judge, however, recognizes Chris' plan and sentenced him to death by the "bonestripper". Chris survives only because of a technical defect in the machine and tries to escape. In the meantime, Diane has also managed to leave the building. In the confusing scrap yard, however, it falls into the hands of two other residents, who then hold onto it. From a hill, Chris notices that the judge has taken Diane hostage and is about to kill. Valkenheiser offers Chris Diane's freedom, if he would give himself up. Valkenheiser only depends on Chris because he thinks he is a banker: Valkenheiser's great-grandfather was once betrayed by a banker. Since then, the Valkenheisers have been taking revenge on society by arresting drivers and executing “guilty parties” such as criminals, fraudsters and bankers.

Chris returns to the junkyard and uses a fuel drum to detonate an entire fuel store. In the ensuing chaos, he is able to free Diane at the last moment and both manage to jump on a passing freight train that takes them back to town. Diane and Chris drive to the police, who drive with a large contingent on the property of the Valkenheisers in order to supposedly evacuate the criminals. But Diane and Chris have to realize that the officers and Valkenheiser know each other well. Shortly before Valkenheiser wants to bring the two back into his power, a mine fire that has been smoldering under the grounds for a long time breaks out. The ground breaks apart and the entire building collapses. Diane and Chris can escape again and return to New York. There Chris learns from television that Judge Valkenheiser survived and is seeking revenge.

Reviews

Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post of 16 February 1991 that the title Nothing but Trouble ( but trouble Nothing ) is significant for the film. He was "unwise", "tasteless" and "nothing but bad" ("nothing but miserable").

Meinolf Zurhorst wrote in the book Demi Moore. Lady and Vamp. that the comedy was "a clear low point in the careers of everyone involved".

"Bowl jokes, stunned stars. Well, weirdness alone doesn't make a good film! "

“An over-the-top genre mix with a little social satire, childish slapstick and black humor that lacks clear lines. A disappointing directing attempt by comedian Dan Aykroyd. "

Awards

David B. Miller was nominated for the Saturn Award for make-up in 1992 .

Dan Aykroyd received the Golden Raspberry in 1992 for his performance . The film was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the following categories: worst actress (Demi Moore), worst supporting actor (John Candy), worst director (Dan Aykroyd), worst film (Robert K. Weiss), worst script.

background

The film was shot in Pennsylvania , New York City , New Jersey and Beverly Hills . Its production amounted to about 40 million US dollars . It grossed $ 8.5 million in US cinemas.

The film is Dan Aykroyd's directorial debut and is based on his personal experiences. Aykroyd himself was arrested in the northwestern province of the United States for speeding and dragged to the nearest court by the police in the middle of the night. In his biography, Chevy Chase wrote, "I knew this was going to be the worst movie I would ever make," but because of his friendship with Aykroyd, he accepted the role of Chris Thorne. Nathan Rabin wrote that this film heralded the end of Aykroyd's career.

The rap band standing in front of the judge is the Digital Underground .

The film is parodied in the 16th episode of the fourth season of South Park Adventure Abuse . There, the city's children get rid of the adults by accusing them of abuse and arresting them, whereupon the city also resembles a scrap heap into which a couple are exposed to a megalomaniac mayor, Eric Cartman, after a breakdown.
