history
The settlement of Viel Rat was first mentioned in 1327 as ad Punctas . At that time the parish church dedicated to St. Anthony already existed . At first, Viel Rat was a parish with Soline and Božava. In 1685 it became an independent parish.
A special attraction is the 42 meter high lighthouse of Veli Rat , built in 1849 . It is one of the highest in the Adriatic. Allegedly it got its good cleaning adhesion from the protein of 100,000 eggs. Next to the lighthouse is the Sveti Nikole chapel. As on the whole island, weekly water transports are carried out by ship due to the lack of fresh water sources.
On June 11, 1983, the Italian freighter Michele ran onto a rock at the northern end of the island near the lighthouse at 4 - 5 m on a rock and sank. Due to the shallow depth, part of the ship remained above the surface of the water. Little by little the wreck crumbles and is a popular place for divers and snorkelers.
