Location and inhabitants
The village is located in the Solišćica Luka bay and is named after the salt flat typical of the bay . The main non-profit sources of the 38 inhabitants are agriculture , especially in wine and fruit growing as well as in fishing . history
Soline was mentioned for the first time in 1114, making it the oldest settlement on the island. The name comes from the salt distilleries.
Church of St. Jacob
The Church of the Holy Apostle Jacob was first mentioned in the 15th century. In 1517 the church was restored and covered with stone slabs. In the same year, Glagolitic characters were also struck into the top of the portal. The inscription was destroyed by lightning in 1879. The parish church also houses a valuable Gothic chalice . There is a cemetery near the parish. An antique white tower rises on the facade of the parish church of St. Jacob. In 1923 two bells were raised. On the larger bell is the inscription:
“Gospe od ružarija, Sv. fabijane i Sebastijane, molite se za nas! Nabavila župa solinska za župnikovanja don Srećka Pavić "
“Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Fabians and Sebastians, pray for us! Donated by the Salina parish for the pastor Don Srećka Pavić "
The other bell bears the inscription:
"Soline - Sv. Jakov. Ljevaonica zvona Jakov Cukrov - Split - 1923. Od munje i groma oslobodi nas, Gospodine! "
"Soline - Sv. Jacob. Foundry of the Jakov Cukrov bell - Split - 1923. Sir! Free us from lightning and thunder. "
The first school on Dugi Otok was built in Soline.
Every year a mass is held on July 25th, the commemoration of St. James, followed by a big city festival.
