Association of university teachers for business administration
The Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration e. V. (VHB) is an association registered in Cologne , which serves the development of business administration as a university discipline.
It pursues this purpose by promoting business research and teaching including the promotion of young talent as well as maintaining contacts between the members, with practice and with similar domestic and foreign institutions.
The association has over 2,000 members who are scientifically active in the field of business administration. It sees itself as an association of German-speaking university professors for business administration. Accordingly, most of the members come from the Federal Republic of Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Other members also work in other European and non-European countries.

In accordance with its statutes passed in 1976, the association pursues the purpose of serving the development of business administration as a university discipline. a. by promoting business research and teaching as well as maintaining contact between the members, with practice and with similar domestic and foreign institutions.
The association has full members and honorary members. Ordinary members are, as a rule, university lecturers and honorary professors who have qualified as professors, as well as young academics who continue to work scientifically after their doctorate, who are aiming for a habilitation or who hold a junior professorship. It is also possible to accept co-opted members. The Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration e. V. consists of the following bodies and institutions:
- Entire board of directors (association management, consisting of the chairman or chairman elected for two years and the deputy as the incumbent board within the meaning of § 26 BGB, a treasurer and four other full board members belong.)
- Board of Directors (consists of the chairmen of the scientific commissions and the speakers of the working groups.)
- Membership Commission (consists of seven members, prepares the decisions of the Board of Directors on the admission of full members.)
- Office
In addition, the association maintains scientific commissions, working groups and several committees with different responsibilities, such as the preparation of the annual scientific meetings or the selection of the association's award winners.
The scientific work within the association takes place primarily in the scientific commissions . These commissions are differentiated according to technical aspects and are constituted by the general meeting upon request. The sixteen scientific commissions reflect the diversity and differentiation of the business administration areas. The association sets up working groups for current tasks .
history
The association was founded on November 26, 1921 as an association of lecturers for business administration at German universities with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. The first conference of lecturers for business administration took place at Pentecost 1914 in Leipzig. The history of the association can be divided into five sections. Heinrich Nicklisch , Ernst Pape and Fritz Schmidt took the initiative to establish the company . Soon Josef Hellauer became a member of the association, and after Eugen Schmalenbach was won, the board of directors with Nicklisch, Schmalenbach and Schmidt remained unchanged until 1933. The consolidation of business administration as a university discipline was closely connected with the establishment of the lecturers' association. In the first development phase from 1921 to 1933, Nicklisch, Schmalenbach and Schmidt not only formed the board of the association for about a decade, they also consolidated the position of this discipline in the canon of sciences together with a number of other university professors in business administration.
The second section in the association's history can be dated from 1933 to 1948. While it was previously assumed that the work of the association was completely suspended during this period, it has now been found on the basis of newly discovered documents that there were indeed some activities during this period, e.g. B. even a Pentecost conference in 1938.
The third phase lasted from the re-establishment of the association until around 1970. On October 22nd and 23rd, 1948, at the suggestion of Rudolf Seyffert , the first meeting after the Second World War took place in the ruins of the University of Frankfurt am Main ; 35 association members took part. The meeting decided to re-establish the Association of Lecturers for Business Administration in the form of a meeting day for the time being. At the next meeting on August 10, 1949, it was decided to continue the association initially in the form of an unregistered association under the name of the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration . At this conference, Eugen Schmalenbach and Fritz Schmidt were made honorary members.
From 1950 the annual meetings of the association - following an old tradition - were held again in the first week after the Whitsun holidays. At the 1950 conference it was decided to reinstate the statutes of the association from its founding years with some additions relating to the name and membership of the association. From 1952 onwards, contacts with experts from abroad were resumed. The members of the Association of Swiss Business Economists, insofar as they were university lecturers, joined the association on the occasion of a meeting of the association in St. Gallen in 1971.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the association entered a new, fourth phase of development. Until then, the association's activities were essentially based on the traditional Whitsun conferences, which documented the scientific progress made in the subject. At the same time, these offered young scientists an opportunity to present their own achievements. The strong increase in the number of business management chairs at scientific universities in the 1960s and the intensifying diversification and specialization of the subject contributed to the fact that in 1970/71, the “Commission for Marketing”, the association's first scientific commission with one permanent task and one independent way of working as part of the association's organization. In the following years the association formed a further fifteen scientific commissions. Since then, the association's work has been based in the same way on the general annual meetings with a general scientific topic in the week of Pentecost and on the intensive work in the specialist areas of the scientific commissions.
Since the beginning of the 2000s, the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration e. V. in its fifth development phase with a stronger international orientation. The association actively promoted the establishment of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management during its annual meeting in Frankfurt in 1990 and is a founding member of it. This is also evident from the fact that the annual Whitsun conference with the topic “Doing Business in Europe - Cross-Cultural Issues” takes place in 2012 for the first time outside the actual core area in Bolzano. Furthermore, the association began to open up more, particularly with regard to the next generation of scientists and the open part of the Whitsun conference. The proportion of women among the full members increased. While almost three dozen members took part in the first association meeting after the Second World War, the association now has around 2000 members.

Coming to terms with National Socialism
On the initiative of Georg Schreyögg , from 1999 the association dealt with the processing of the fate of those business administration university lecturers who were persecuted by National Socialism or who were harmed by it. Following the results of a specially set up working group, contacts were sought with social and economic historians and found with Jürgen Kocka and his doctoral student Peter Mantel . In cooperation with the VHB working group, the historians started their work and at the same time submitted an application for funding from the DFG on the subject of business administration under National Socialism (with special consideration of the persecution of university lecturers in business administration) , which was approved in April 2004. Peter Mantel presented his research and research work to the VHB in August 2006 and completed the work in September 2007 with a dissertation. The work was published in 2009 under the title Business Administration and National Socialism - An Institutional and Personal History Study by Gabler-Verlag.

Pentecost meeting
The annual meeting of the association, which traditionally takes place in the week after Pentecost (Pentecost meeting), serves the scientific dialogue, the discussion of business and university policy issues as well as the personal meeting of the association members. The scientific part of the Whitsun Conference takes place under a general topic. In addition to contributions on the general topic, the scientific exchange takes place in the open part of the conference on all topics of business administration. All accepted contributions have gone through a double-blind review process.
Work meetings
In addition to the Whitsun conference, the association organizes working conferences on current university policy issues at regular intervals. In particular, topics from the areas of research and teaching are dealt with.
Open Access Journal BuR-Business Research
The association publishes the open access journal BuR - Business Research , an English-language electronic journal. He cooperates on technical and editorial issues with the University and City Library of Cologne and the University Library Center (hbz).
Journal ranking VHB-JOURQUAL
The VHB-JOURQUAL is a ranking of economically relevant journals based on the assessments of the VHB members. The first ranking took place in 2003. The ranking is currently available in version 2.1, which combines data from 2008 and 2011. The aim of the ranking is to create transparency with regard to the quality of business journals and thereby facilitate the comparative evaluation of the publication performance of scientists.
VHB ProDok
Based on two developments, the VHB would like to support doctoral training with its own doctoral program across universities. On the one hand, there are few business-oriented structured doctoral programs within the German-speaking area . On the other hand, the existing graduate schools can provide methodical and theoretical basic training, but mostly due to the insufficient number of participants they do not have the opportunity to give sufficiently specific thematic focuses for specific research areas. Through specialized theory and method courses, the course offer should take into account the greater specialization of research, both in terms of content and method.
Career advancement
In the run-up to the Whitsun conference , pre- conference workshops are held, which are intended to offer a focused introduction to a scientific method or a topic. The target group are young scientists. On the career panel , post-doctoral candidates and junior professors can meet with university representatives and exchange information about professorships that become vacant. A job exchange on the VHB website provides information about job advertisements in the academic field of business administration.
Association prices
The association awards several prizes to recognize excellent research and teaching and to highlight it as an incentive. The Best Paper Award, the Textbook Award and the Young Talent Award are given annually. The Best Paper Award is intended to encourage members to expand their scientific publications beyond the German-speaking area and to take part in international discussion. The young scientist award is given to younger and also to young scientists who have not received a doctorate for an excellent scientific publication. With the textbook award, the association promotes outstanding textbooks. This is intended to emphasize the importance of scientifically founded teaching in business administration.
At the annual conference of the association (Whitsun conference), contributions are presented in the open part of the conference, which are approved for the presentation as a result of a selection process by the program committee. In connection with these contributions, three conference prizes for the Best Conference Paper , the Best Practice Paper and the Best Reviewer will be awarded during the Whitsun conference .
Furthermore, the Schmalenbach Foundation, in cooperation with the Schmalenbach Society e. V. and the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration e. V. a prize for excellent scientific work in the field of practice-oriented business administration ( Schmalenbach Prize ). The aim is to promote the discussion of business management issues with the Schmalenbach Prize.
Once a year, the Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft e. V. also awarded the " Science-oriented Entrepreneur of the Year " prize. The prize is aimed at personalities in practice who have promoted the support of communication between science and business in general and in particular the subject of business administration with great commitment. By honoring such science mediators and patrons, the aim is to create role models whose effect goes beyond the VHB in everyday university and business life.
