Victor Ambros
Victor Ambros (* 1953 in Hanover , New Hampshire ) is an American biologist and professor of molecular medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School .
Life
Ambros grew up in Hartland , Vermont . He earned a Bachelor of Biology degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts in 1975 and a Ph.D. in 1979 with David Baltimore there. in biology with a thesis on the genetics of the poliovirus . He also stayed at MIT as a postdoctoral fellow and worked with Gary Ruvkun in H. Robert Horvitz's laboratory . Ambros received his first professorship in 1985 at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before he was appointed to Dartmouth College in 1992 . In 2008 he moved to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester , Massachusetts.
Act
In 1993, Ambros and his group reported the first microRNA (a gene product of lin-4 ), which plays an important role in the development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . It later became clear that non-coding RNA of this class also occur in higher organisms and play an important role in gene regulation . Ambros' current work deals with the micro-RNA-mediated regulations in the development of animals (including fruit flies ) and in various human diseases.
