Villers-Bocage Town Hall

Villers-Bocage is a French municipality with 3108 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement Vire and the canton of Aunay-sur-Odon . The inhabitants are called Villersois .

geography

Villers-Bocage is about 22 kilometers southwest of Caen . Villers-Bocage is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Villy-Bocage in the north, Parfouru-sur-Odon in the northeast, Épinay-sur-Odon in the east, Maisoncelles-Pelvey in the south and southwest and Tracy-Bocage in the west.

The former route nationale 175 , 177 and the autoroute A84 run through the municipality .

history

On June 13, 1944, the Battle of Villers-Bocage , a tank battle , took place here during the Allied Operation Perch . Here the Germans were initially able to stop the British advance in Normandy. In Operation Epsom, the community was destroyed by Allied bombers.
