Election to the Berlin House of Representatives

The election to the Berlin House of Representatives and to the Borough Assemblies will be held every five years in 1999. Before that, the legislature or electoral term was four years. The elections in the years from 1948 up to and including 1989 refer only to West Berlin due to the political division of the city .

The state election law is decisive for the general conditions of the election. According to § 1, every German who has reached the age of 18 on the day of the election and has lived in Berlin for at least 3 months is entitled to vote.

The last election took place on September 18, 2016 . The SPD became the strongest party ahead of the CDU and the Left Party . The AfD moved into the Berlin House of Representatives for the first time. The next election is expected to take place in autumn 2021.
